This Could be the Best Late Fall in Years

As we are moving into the late fall, early winter we are experiencing some things that we have not seen in many years. First of all it is relatively a warm winter, and because of that the lake water temperature is keeping the lake really active. I can't remember the last time we have seen 50 plus degree water temperature in mid December.

With the warmer water we are seeing schools of shad being followed and ambushed all day long during a time of year that chasing is always slow and the bass are generally suspending. The bass being active is just not the norm now so my choice of bait has been a big 1 oz. Punisher Spinner Bait. The bass are hanging under the massive schools of bait and feeding freely throughout the day. Big spinner baits to me have flash and movement and being pulled thru schools of bait is just the ticket to a big Guntersville strike.

I have found with all the people throwing the A-rig out there that a big spinner bait is much less physically demanding, certainly not nearly as expensive and rigged correctly is catching as many fish as the A-rig on the same type of pattern the A-rig fisherman are using. Also, as seems to be the case with the A-rig angles are making a big difference in other words if your fishing an area loaded with bait and not getting any strikes work the area from as many angles as possible until you find a boat position and angle that causes a strike. Fish the spinner bait slow and change the depth with speed, role it on the bottom, pull it quickly through the bait for suspending fish and jig it some for variety. I assure you the spinner bait is catching those big bass as well as any lure right now.

Lastly to add some movement to the spinner bait I am taking a big swim bait and using it as a trailer, and between the tail movement of a swim bait and the natural vibration of the spinner bait, catching is better than the fishing!
