The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are continuing to find some big fluke and abundant black sea bass on the inshore wrecks and artificial reefs. The bigger fluke seem to be in deeper water now, and the boats are finding a higher keeper percentage by focusing their efforts there.
Thanks to the constantly changing fishing regulations, the captains have to keep an eye on the calendar to be sure exactly what is in season and what is out. The black sea bass season will take a break from September 4 through September 22 and reopen again on September 22 through October 14. It will close again until November 1 and remain open for the rest of the year.
The fluke season will continue until September 28 and will close the next day on September 29 until next spring. As long as we do not get hit by any hurricanes or tropical storms, that bite should be good right up to the end.
The canyon fishery is still decent with some good tuna and mahi-mahi fishing at a relative shorter run from the inlet than usual. Now that the busy summer tourist season is completed, the captains have some open dates for fishing both inshore and offshore. In addition, many of the captains are already booking dates for the fall striped bass season.
Right now the bay waters are filled with spot, peanut bunker, and mullet. With all of this bait around, the upcoming striper season in bay waters could very well be a very good one.
