A RAINY DAY

BRINGS JORDAN LAKE'S BIG BASS SHALLOW

Last week Alabama got some well deserved rain. Actually this was the first good all day rain we have seen in weeks, followed by a couple of days featuring scattered rain and cloudy skies.

I knew it was time to plan a trip to Jordan Lake and seek out those big spotted bass and maybe a few largemouths would cooperate as well. A client of Reeds Guide Service thought so to.

In all while fishing points, pockets, rock bluffs, and standing timber we had about 20 bass.

Whenever it has been sunny, bright, blue bird skies and then cold nights to follow each high pressure day, the fishing's going to be tough.

No matter what lake your own.

But an astute angler can bet his bottom dollar that when a southerly, rainy front suddenly moves in these bass will feed and continue to fatten up for the winter months ahead...usually in reckless abandon.

Meaning schooling bass and bass in the shallows all day and the use of topwater lures and spinnerbaits.

Searching for schooling bass throughout Jordan lakes 20 miles of water means a lot of casting as well. So using lures that cover water fast is the ticket.

Topwater lures for those bass busting shad and spinnerbaits for cruising bass or bass found near rocky banks, laydown trees or any main lake point work together very well.

Any time you see bass busting bait fish you need to get a lure to them fast. It seems they do not stay up very long when doing so.

This means the use of a big, heavy topwater lure, one that can be cast twice as far as other smaller topwater lures. One lure that will reach those bass and entice them to hit.

The Heddon Zara Super Spook is just one of the many topwaters we used to fool these bass on this rainy, cloudy day (or at dawn on most other days.)

As the picture shows it was a great day!
