Fort Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Quinn Kirkland with wife, children and friend from Montana chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some fishing Fort Lauderdale, FL. Our main angler was 7 year old Corbin Kirkland, along with their daughter, Megan.

We had blue skies here in Fort Lauderdale, winds out of the east 7-10 mph, seas running 3-4 ft. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in the water at the sea buoy in Ft. Lauderdale FL, since we are located so close to the inlet in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We started off trolling with two plainers down, one with a double hook Mullet strip with a pink and blue sea witch in front and a double hook Bonito strip with a blue and white sea witch in front. For surface baits we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips and a Ballyhoo teaser.

The blue water was pushed in passed our drop off which is 120 ft. of water in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I trolled in and out criss-crossing the drop off, catching Mackerels. From there I could see some birds working to the east of me, so I headed towards the birds. I could see a slick in the water – 9 out of 10 times the slick is caused from sargassum weed and when you find sargassum weed the Mahi Mahi are not to far away. As I worked the area, I found some wood debris floating, and our charter aboard the Happy Day Today wound up catching 7 Mahi Mahi's and 3 Tunas. From there, I decided to fly the kite – with little current, it is always a good practice to go to some type of structure which will hold the bait fish and in return the predators. I headed towards one of our 34 artificial wrecks in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where I set up two kites with two baits on each kite. Thirty minutes into flying the kites a large Mahi Mahi attacked the left long kite – he even looked large from a distance while he jumped out of the water. Quinn was our angler on this one – twenty-five minutes later he was rewarded with a 28 lb Bull Mahi Mahi measuring 48 inches.

It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
