Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Kirk Bean along with his family, Andy, Rich, Tom, Jeff and Bob from Washington chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the east at 15 mph, seas running 4-5 ft., temperatures in the low 80's.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water off the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. Due to our extreme drop off, if you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water. We started out trolling with two plainers down, one with a blue and white sea witch and the other with a brown and pink sea witch – both having double hooked Bonito strips. For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips. We trolled the reefs catching four Kingfish and four Bonitos.

I decided to do some live bait kite fishing and set up in 140 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale close to one of our 34 artificial wrecks. After getting the two kites up, I told Dave, our mate, to put a Shark bait down on the bottom. As the bait reached the bottom, the rod bent and line screamed off the 80 International Reel. A half hour later, Andy reeled in an estimated 180 lb. Bull Shark; pictures were taken and the Shark was released to fight again. We reset the kites and shortly after a Sailfish appeared on the left short, very lethargically swimming, showing no interest in the bait. Dave splashed the bait by raising and lowering it and enticed the Sailfish enough for him to eat the bait – the fun was on – Sailfish tail-walking away from the boat. After putting on a fantastic aerobatic show, Tom reeled the Sailfish to the boat – pictures were taken and the fish was released to fight again.

With good memories of their fishing experience, it was time to head back. All the anglers relaxed in the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
