As ice out on Rangeley Lake occured on April 16th, we fished the lake on April 20th and had some steady action on sewed smelt. We boated 6 salmon in the 18 to 23 range and a fat 15 inch brook trout. We caught fish from 5 to 25 feet down, mostly in front of a stream where the smelts run. Fishing should be hot for the next few weeks and I have heard of a few fish being caught that top the 5.5 pound mark. So now is the time to get out there and catch them on light tackle near the surface.
