Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

John Luzzi, an avid fisherman, and family from Boston incorporated a business trip with a fishing charter aboard the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL. Temperature was in the mid 80's with a gentle breeze out of the east at 8 mph and 2-3 ft. seas.

The run out to the drop off, which sits in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL less than 2 miles from shore, is a total of 15 minutes from leaving the dock. If you venture off another ¼ of a mile from the drop off, you would be in the range of 500 ft. of water, due to our extreme drop off very close to shore, compared to the northeast coast of our country where you would have to travel 50 miles to get to that depth of water.

We started off with one plainer down with a blue and white double hook Bonito strip; for surface baits we went with three Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips with a Ballyhoo dredge teaser. I trolled south of Fort Lauderdale on a blue-green edge located in 170 ft. of water, which looked very promising. Our first bite was a Bonito on one of our surface baits followed by a Kingfish on the plainer rod. Then a black shadow appeared on the dredge teaser; the shadow belonged to a Sailfish!!! Our mate, Jackson, dropped back a Ballyhoo to the Sailfish; the Sailfish bill came out of the water, and he swatted back and forth frantically to eat the Ballyhoo. On his 4th try he was finally successful and ate the Ballyhoo – now the fun started!!! The Sailfish made an initial run first and then came out of the water tail-walking while Jackson, with help from the Luzzi family, cleared the rest of the lines to avoid any entanglements. After a 25 minute battle, John, the angler, subdued the Sailfish and brought him to the side of the boat for picture taking; the Sailfish was released to fight again.

With five Bonitos and four Kingfish in the box along with the Sailfish adventure, it was an exciting trip for John and his family. The Luzzi family retired to the a/c salon for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
