Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Steve and Teresa McKinley, along with their son, Mike, from Michigan chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Today winds were out of the south, southeast at 5-10 mph, seas running 1-3 ft., temperatures in the high 80's with blue skies.

As the McKinley's boarded the boat, we discussed how different fishing is between fresh water fishing in Michigan and salt water fishing in Ft. Lauderdale; this was the family's first time fishing in South Florida.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water by the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. If you travel another ¼ mile off shore, you would find yourself in 500 ft. of water due to our extreme drop off. We do have a good advantage here in Fort Lauderdale with 34 artificial wrecks located in 60 ft. of water out to 420 ft. These artificial wrecks will attract bait fish and in return the predators will be close by.

We put two #8 plainers down and four surface baits and trolled over the areas where some of the artificial wrecks were located catching five Kingfish, two Bonitos, and two Cudas. After this, Michael asked if we could do some Shark fishing so we obliged and set up for Shark fishing over one of the deeper wrecks. There was no waiting time - as soon as the bottom Shark bait reached its depth, the rod bent over. Michael hopped into the fighting chair and started to enjoy his battle. After a fifteen minute fight, the Hammerhead Shark was brought into the boat for picture taking, hook removed and released to fight again. Steve asked if we could try doing it again – we had another thirty-five minute left on the trip so we put the Shark baits out again. This time, no hook-ups.

The anglers retired into the a/c salon to relax on the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
