Halder.( Documentation will be provided the winner of the auction indicating the date of publication, author and magazine name.SEE FOOTNOTE) This informative, 9 page, illustrated magazine article gives a great picture of what game-fishing was like in the Florida Keys in the 1890s. Of course, access to the Keys was by water only, and the incredible fishing that existed in this pristine environment at that time is described in a vivid Hemingwayesque style in this great article. The various methods for catching tarpon, barracuda, hogfish, and other species are described in this extremely well written, highly detailed account of a fishing excursion of experienced northern fisherman. A local expert guide was on hand to teach the fishermen the habits and haunts of the various fish species and the locally popular methods for landing them. There are some extremely good fishing tips in this piece from this old Spanish guide. Fishing from the shore for tarpon using a hand line was the accepted local method and amazingly some really tremendous specimens were caught from shore by hand line as recorded in this piece. Rod and reel were also employed as recorded in the article. Methods of using spears to gather baitfish and to land barracuda from small skiffs are described in good detail. Long Key was the setting for this particular article and there's a nice description of what Long Key was like at that time. There is a particularly humorous account of one of the northerners wading in the shallow surf, and getting inundated and trapped in an unexpected feeding frenzy of Jacks that were pursuing millions of small fry up to the beach. There's a really nice illustration of this fairly common event which was locally called a "jack-beat". There's also a nice account of catching a hogfish, and another humorous account describing the greenhorns hauling a huge slithering Great Spotted Moray into a small boat much to their horror, and consternation. This is a great article--- There are 8 really nice illustrations including---Nets for Mullet---Fishing for Tarpon---Tarpon-angling---Taking home the Tarpon---. Spearing Barracuda---. Towed by a Barracuda ---A Jack Beat---Catching a Hogfish---. This is not a modern reprint or photocopy but rather an authentic 118 year-old magazine article and a great source Florida Fishing Lore.
