Choosing the best paddle is even more important than deciding which boat to buy.  Despite its simplicity, a paddle performs a variety of technical functions, in effect acting like the transmission, drivetrain, brakes, and steering wheel in your car.

When I first started kayaking I thought I?d put all of my money into a good boat and then buy the least expensive paddle.  So I started out with an aluminum paddle that looked like two oars stuck together.  I could barely lift my arms after thirty minutes of kayaking.  After one season of that torture I did some research and found that weight and design do make a difference.  So I decided to spend a little more money and bought a fiberglass paddle.  Now I could kayak for an hour or so before my arms were dragging.  I thought this is better but still not the best.  So, more research, a little more money, and for the next season I bought a carbon paddle.  What a difference!  Now my kayaking time is determined by anything but the paddle.  You must have carbon if you love to kayak!

For you ?techies? the specs are below.  This has the new TLC-Turn Lock Coupler ferrule system, with no tools, holes or hassles for changing the feather angle.  For everyone else, understand that this blade shape is suitable for ALL type of kayaking, entry level/recreational right through to long-distance touring.  It is silky smooth through the water and has an incredibly low swing weight.   

Remember?you need a top quality paddle to make kayaking pleasurable. The two most important factors when determining a suitable paddle length are your height and the boat width.  You want to be able to get the paddle blade into the water without hitting your hand on the cowling or having to reach or lean over the side of the boat.  Your paddling style should also be considered:  more aggressive paddlers tend to use a high angle more vertical stroke and will often use a shorter paddle; touring kayakers tend to use a low angle more horizontal stroke and will often use a longer paddle.
