Garmin GPSMAP 540 ChartPlotters Reviews

- Manufacture Details

Details:

The Garmin 540 is one of our favorite units on the water. The unit comes with charts preloaded to include the coast of the United States and Bahamas. The screen comes in a 5” QVGA and we find it is a great match on boats 21 feet and under or if you are on a budget. The screen is very simple to move around and the buttons are straightforward. It can be flush mounted or put on a stand on your console; either mount type is very convenient for boaters.

If you decide to add the sounder that is available in the 540s model, than you will need a transducer. We also think the upgraded XM weather is a nice feature, especially for those without radar on their boat, which are most small boaters. The weather comes through via satellite is very convenient to watch afternoon thunderstorms or determine routes to escape bad weather.

Installed this unit on my Sea Hunt. Flush mounted into the console and it is a very nice display. The charts are VERY well done.

We bought this unit because of the built in mapping. It is very precise and the channels are very easy to read and find. I agree with the previous review that the screen is a bit small, but the bigger units are much more money so this will do just fine!

Rating: Perfect Little Unit

I have this unit on my flats boat and it gets me around the complex areas of Flamingo, Ten Thousand Islands, Naples, Etc. without any problems. I love the weather feature also that gives me big boat confidence in areas that I am new to. I recommend this unit to anyone that is new to navigating unfamiliar areas. I would give this unit 5 stars, however the screen is a bit small for me when running fast. I would upgrade to the bigger unit if I had the extra cash, otherwise this unit does the job!
