lake erie Northeast Ohio's closest Great Lake, Lake Erie, is being bombarded with more than 150 dangerous and foreign species. These species could spell disaster for Lake Erie's fragile ecosystem if they are allowed to continue to remain living in its currently healthy waters, as well as damage a large portion of northeast Ohio's economy. Some of the invasive species have even been found to carry Viral Hemorrhagic Septicema, a disease very harmful to the fish that now inhabit Lake Erie. The citizens of northeast Ohio need to take a pro-active approach toward dealing with the causes of this infestation of Lake Erie by threatening species, or they will regret the disastrous consequences for years to come. This song will inspire you to help! Lyrics: Hey Lake Erie How's it going? Are you still keeping water Flowin into the ocean? Well guess what that can't happen no more cause you've got invasive species comin through your back door. they come tearing through your waters wreaking havoc all the time and the fact that no one stops them should be thought of as a crime. You've got more invaders than that Game at the arcade 150 different kinds make homes Within your bay. There's zebra mussels clinging to All the hard substrates faster than you clean em up to keep em all away. carp come from the west and ruffe come from the east put 'em both in Erie and you've got one wild beast but fear not lake there's always help on its way in the form of concerned people who care about your fate. they'll take the carp barrier and rebuild its fragile frame until it's up and running stronger than mr. Jack LaLanne. Ballast water Will be inspected If congress Is ever respected. Zebra mussels just need Less things to cling to Or less food to prey on And mud to run into. Surveillance programs keep The ruffe at bay, but Why can't other species have it That way? Start your own program With a group of friends To ensure that the evil-stopping Fun just never ends. With vigilance from citizens To halt invasive things Lake Erie will be happy And everyone will sing: "go Lake Erie It's your birthday We gonna party Like it's your birthday" "go Lake Erie It's your birthday We gonna party Like it's your birthday" And then when Everything is solved Other problems will also Just dissolve. The economy will get a boost With fewer fish dying And less fishermen Will come home crying. The fish will all be glad That you thought of them And they will know that You ain't no fool. So now that you know, Go out, and stop the hate. Don' t let It remain for Even one more day. Because every day you do More fish come into town And whenever that happens Lake Erie starts to frown. So keep Lake Erie happy And block it for all day I know I will, and if I see You I'll say hey. Views: 1326 Rating:

Grand River Kayaking, Elora Gorge, Ontario, Canada Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving across water. Kayaking is generally differentiated from canoeing by the fact that a kayak has a closed cockpit and a canoe has an open cockpit. However, there are many sit-on-top kayaks, and these boats are growing in popularity. They also use a two bladed paddle. Another major difference is in the way the paddler sits in the boat. Kayakers sit in a seat on the bottom of the boat with their legs extended out in front of them. Canoeists will either sit on an elevated bench seat or kneel directly on the bottom of the boat. Whitewater kayaking involves taking a kayak down rapids. Sea kayaking sometimes also referred to as Ocean Kayaking involves taking kayaks out on to the ocean or other open water i.e a lake. Sea kayaking can involve short paddles with a return to the starting point or "put-in" or expeditions covering many miles and days. Kayaking of all kinds has continued to increase in general popularity through the 1990s and early 21st century. Kayaks are classified by their intended use. There are five primary classifications: whitewater, surf, touring/expedition, light touring/day tripping and general recreation. From these primary classifications stem many sub-classes. For example, a fishing kayak is simply a general recreation kayak outfitted with features and accessories that make it an easier kayak to fish from. Also within these classifications are many levels of performance which further separate the individual models. In other words, not all touring kayaks handle the same. There are two major configurations of kayaks - "sit on tops" which as the name suggests involves sitting on top of the kayak in an open area and "cockpit style" which involves sitting with the legs and hips inside the kayak hull and a "spray skirt" that creates a watertight barrier around the waist. Whether a kayak is a sit-on-top or a cockpit style has nothing to do with which classification it falls under. Both configurations are represented in each of the five primary classifications. While most kayaks are designed to be paddled by a single person, other configurations include tandem and even triple cockpit boats. Because of their range and adaptability, Kayaking is popular amongst divers, fishers, and adventure enthusiasts. The outstanding natural and cultural values of our national parks have led to many being proclaimed World Heritage Area's. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year, to experience the wilderness, and to learn about the Aboriginal Dreamtime - something that little of us know anything about, and which is perhaps one of humanities greatest secrets. "This is Aboriginal land and you are welcome. Look around and learn, in order to understand Aboriginal people and also understand that Aboriginal culture is strong and alive." Nellie Patterson, traditional owner. New South Wales National Parks, Blue Mountains National Park, Budawang, Kosciuszko National Park, Royal. South Australia National Parks Belair, Coorong, Lake Eyre, Seal Bay. Australia is the driest continent in the world and is part of a former giant land mass, Gondwana, which connected the southern continents of Africa, Antarctica, Australia, India and South America, and broke up more than 100 million years ago. More than 58 million hectares (ha) of protected areas cover about 7.55 per cent of Australia's continental land area. In addition to the national parks on the mainland, there are others located on Australia's external territories, including Norfolk Island (650 ha), Christmas Island (8952 ha), Pulu Keeling (2602 ha), Heard and McDonald Islands (1 138 260 ha) and the Australian Antarctic Territories (1 153 610 ha). With these areas included, a total of 60.4 million ha (7.85 per cent) of Australia's land area is protected. Under the Australian Constitution, the creation and management of national parks and other nature conservation areas is the responsibility of State governments. However, 15 parks and reserves are administered by the federal government. Queensland National Parks include the Fraser Island National Park, Glass House Mountains National Park, Whitsunday Islands National Park Victoria National Parks indclude Alpine, Ironbark, Lake Eildon, Mitchell River, Mount Richmond, Snowy Mountains Five hundred and sixteen national parks cover 3.42 per cent of the land surface (25.7 million ha) and are registered under federal and State legislation. In addition, more than 2700 designated conservation areas are found all over Australia and cover 3.57 per cent of the land surface. They include fauna and flora reserves, conservation parks, environment parks and Aboriginal areas as well as national parks. These too are protected by federal or State legislation. There are also 145 marine protected areas, which cover almost 38 million ha. They range from Commonwealth Marine Parks, such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, to fish habitat reserves, fish sanctuaries, aquatic reserves, conservation areas, marine parks and marine and coastal parks. Of these, the federal government has responsibility for 19 areas, New South Wales eight, the Northern Territory three, South Australia 15, Tasmania three, Victoria three, Western Australia 13 and Queensland 81. Australia has 11 World Heritage properties, totalling 42.6 million ha. Each contains outstanding universal values. Most are also designated as national parks. ROMiEViZON - BABY GRACE www.romievizon.com Please call the Galveston County Sheriff at 409-766-2222 or toll free 866-248-8477 if you have any information about BABY GRACE Or call the Laura Recovery Center at 281-482-LRCF(5723) or (toll free) 866-898-5723; FAX: 281-482-5727 For now, they are calling her Baby Grace. She had wavy, blond hair that fell to the middle of her back. She wore a pink or red cropped shirt and a matching skirt. On her feet were white sneakers with pink flower decorations that lighted up and flashed when she walked. Sometime before someone stuffed the unidentified 2- to 5-year-old child into a storage box several weeks ago, her skull was fractured, authorities said. On Thursday, investigators issued an international plea for help to identify the little girl whose body washed up inside a blue utility box on a Galveston Bay island late Monday. "It's despicable that someone would dispose of this little girl's body in the way that they did," said Galveston County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Barry during an emotional news conference Thursday. "We will follow any lead to try to find the identity of Baby Grace." Baby Grace is the name investigators adopted for the little girl shortly after a fisherman found her body late Monday along the Intracoastal Waterway. "It (Grace) means 'given,' or 'on behalf of,' " said sheriff's Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo. "Now, we all feel that we are going to give her all our focus." Galveston County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Pustilnik said the girl had been dead for at least two weeks, possibly more. Although a cause of death has yet to be determined, authorities are treating the case as a homicide. An autopsy showed that the child "had skull fractures ... and there was no other trauma found," Pustilnik said. Authorities are trying to determine if the girl had been sexually assaulted, he said. The FBI, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Houston Police Department are assisting in the investigation as authorities work to get a sketch of the child released to the public. HPD sketch artist Lois Gibson met with the medical examiner early Thursday. "I am really glad to get a chance to cry out for the baby," Gibson said. "I want to cry out for her; she can't talk. And I want to be her voice." Gibson has worked for HPD on dozens of homicides and missing persons cases, including cases involving about six missing children. Baby Grace is white and weighed between 25 and 30 pounds and stood about 32 to 35 inches tall. The child was found wrapped in plastic bags and stuffed in a blue 92-quart tote locker with a black handle — Sterilite-brand model 1842, authorities said. The girl's top was a pullover with three-quarter-length sleeves, and the bottom was a broom skirt. She wore panties with a Disney label inside and a figure that appeared to be a princess on the outside, investigators said. Her shoes, made by Athletic Works, were the company's "Tiara" model and had been available at Wal-Mart stores. Her top and skirt are believed to have been sold by Target. Investigators said they believe they will learn the girl's name and be able to find out how she died as word about the case spreads and the right person hears her description. "There's a grandparent who hasn't seen their grandchild in the last couple of weeks," Pustilnik said. "There's an aunt or an uncle someplace, maybe locally, maybe somewhere in the state, maybe somewhere around the nation who has not seen the tragic end to this little girl, what she came to." The body was found on a marshy sandbar in an area known as Greens Cut near Greens Lake, where there is a break in the barrier separating West Galveston Bay from the Intracoastal Waterway, he said. Tuttoilmondo estimated that the cut is about five miles southwest of the Galveston Causeway. Investigators in the sheriff's office are studying Galveston Bay's tides to determine the possible drift of the plastic storage container from another location, Tuttoilmondo said. "I don't think there is any indication that where she was found is where she was killed," he said. "That's a foregone conclusion." Earlier this week, Galveston County officials put out an alert to participants in a fishing tournament held there last weekend in an effort to find out whether any participants had seen anything unusual, Tuttoilmondo said. The tournament was a benefit to aid children, he said. kevin.moran@chron.com anne.kilday@chron.com Views: 249177 Rating:
