Shasta Lake Trout Fishing Derby biting like wild dogs.. Fished the Lake Shasta Lake Trout Derby this weekend with rep Ray Link. We left on thursday morning and drove up in very windy condition which remain with us through Saturday making it fun to fish with boat control being a full time job. We had our share of tangles during the pre-fish as we were pulling different lures. On the tournament days we pulled identical setups so very few tangles even tho wind remained a boat control job but the fish were biting like wild dogs. I only brought back two fish so catch and release was the norm except for tournament fish. There were 150 fishermen in the tournament and we were just outside the money on our weights. Used baby Minnow Bullet Rotator™ on pre-fish and Shasta tackle stuff on tournament days. Saw Tran and his fishing buddy. Saw Harold Jones of Sugarloaf Cottage Resort a long time friend and stayed with Gary Mirales of Shasta Tackle. Event held at Bass Hole Bar and Grill in Lakehead, California. The Lake is very low with only a couple of launches open and low water bring all the boats in favorite hot bite areas and making watching where you were going just like a hot salmon bite on the ocean. Big Bear Carp Roundup, June 7-8 2008 Part 2 This was the 5th annual Big Bear Carp Roundup held at Big Bear Lake CA. This is part 2 of 3 videos. On June 5, 2004, archers from all over California combed the shores of Big Bear Lake in pursuit of the prolific carp and the possibility of winning a cash prize. The 1st annual "Carp Round-up" was sponsored by the Big Bear Municipal Water District (MWD) in order to reduce the exploding carp population in the Lake, and to give California archers a chance to hunt the Lake in a controlled atmosphere. The enthusiasm was overwhelming and the participation was outstanding for a first year event. Carp pose a threat to the ecological balance of Big Bear Lake causing turbidity, (muddy water) and depleting food sources for the more desirable species of game and feeder fish. Around the country, carp have become a menace in many lakes, streams and rivers. The means of control vary from poisoning, electro fishing or even killing off an entire lake fishery and starting from scratch to establish a new fishery. The MWD doesn't favor any of these methods and chose to try a reasonable alternative to those extreme and costly methods. The first tournament hosted almost 100 entrants and harvested about 4,000 lbs. of unwanted carp from the waters of Big Bear Lake. Each entrant received a "First Annual Carp Round-up" T-shirt (hunter orange of course), a fish bag for their catch and a complimentary hot dog lunch. Numerous raffle prizes were also awarded. First prize for the 2004 event was $585.00, second prize was $351.00 and third prize, as well as heaviest individual carp, was $117.00. All of the fish that were removed from the lake were utilized, some for fertilizer and others for table fare.
