Tour Guide Hawaii Presents: Kahalu'u Beach Park, Big Island Loll in sand and sun under swaying palms, watch humpback whales dance in an exotic Kona sunset, snorkel among rainbow-colored fish on a protected reef or ride surf where the Kings of Hawai'i defined the sport a thousand years ago! Kahalu'u is the crown jewel of Kona Coast County Beach Parks. Abundant parking, disabled access, picnic tables, two shaded pavilions, two sets of public restrooms, showers and lifeguards round-out the facilities of this beautiful beach park. Most days there is a food wagon selling sandwiches, burgers, shave ice and cold drinks at reasonable prices and a vendor renting snorkeling gear and boogy boards. This beach can be crowded on weekends, but there is always room for another snorkeler in the water. This is the premiere snorkeling beach of the Island of Hawai'i; protected from the open sea by a jetty, the reef is also protected against commercial aquarium fishing. Thus, the snorkeling is in calm, shallow water; frequently during low tide, one can actually walk to the jetty, a couple hundred feet offshore. Also, there is an abundance of fish of an enormous variety...perhaps the best display on the island. For these two reasons, Kahalu'u is where many visitors head for their introduction to snorkeling. Dozens of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and a few Hawksbill Sea Turtles call this bay home, eating the limu and thrilling the snorkelers. Numerous freshwater springs and shallow water bathers make the near-shore snorkeling unpleasantly cloudy, but about 50 feet offshore the water turns crystal clear and the display of coral is nothing short of amazing. Outside the breakwater one may occasionally see deepwater species such as marlin, tuna, dolphin and small sharks. Towards the south, where the bay shallows to a series of tide pools, many species of shrimp and seaweed not commonly seen in West Hawai'i are abundant. Northward, and outside the bay, is an excellent surf break that is for intermediate or better surfers and boogy boarders. There is a fair current north out of the bay and along the coast...swimmers caught in this current should relax and swim with the current, angling towards land...they will come to shore a few hundred yards north of Kahalu'u and be able to walk back along the road. The breakwater predates the 15th century temple complexes in the area and is widely said to have been built by the menehune (sort of the Hawai'ian equivalent to leprechauns), but building was actually initiated to enclose the bay as a fishpond. Whether the work became beyond the powers of the Ali'i at the time to administrate or the surfing faction won-out in the battle over use of Kahalu'u Bay is not known, but the breakwater was already in disarray at the time of European contact in the 18th century. Sign up today www.kiteforsail.com Kite boat sails to Molokai on first inter-island journey Written by Kate Bradshaw 10-2-2007 It was a muggy Sunday morning on Maui's western tip. The gleaming Pacific lapped at ruins of the old pier at Mala Wharf. A deceptively quiet morning, there was no blaring indicator that a green-movement milestone was about to be achieved. Like any morning on the island, day trippers poised at boat launches, backing their boats into the water, tying and untying knots, and dusting off their sea legs. Many likely groaned at the dent fuel would put into their wallets. But not Dan Tracy and crew, who were gearing up to sail from Maui to Molokai in a kite-powered, 24-foot Corsair trimaran. While Tracy and crew have taken the boat out before — and even made the news for catching a 20-pound ono while fishing from the boat — this was the first inter-island voyage for the unique vessel. With the water at Mala Wharf "perfectly calm," conditions looked ideal. The kite apparatus, which Maine native and lifelong sailor/fisherman Tracy designed and built, looks absolutely nothing like any watercraft outside the imagination. "This is the most complicated, sophisticated apparatus outside of 'Waterworld' that you'll see," said crewmember Brian Thomas, who has been sailing since before he was born (his mother having been an avid sailor), as he helped prepare the kite for its unprecedented voyage. There is no mast. Instead, an elaborate array of ropes, pulleys, and a giant hand-cranked winch sits atop an elevated area of the boat. This is how the 18-square-foot kite is controlled. Everything, including, of course, a chair for the driver, is attached to a rotating platform that allows the driver to harness the wind from any direction. An outboard engine helps the boat into and out of harbors and assists the kite in times of low wind. Other than that, Tracy's boat relies solely on wind. The kite's high elevation allows it to catch stronger, steadier wind than a conventional sail, which makes for quicker travel time. Tacking across the wind of the Pailolo Channel — a waterway that is known to be rough — Sunday morning, the boat reached a top speed of more than 11 knots. The kite pulled the boat slightly up out of the water, easing the blow of the roughest chop. Tracy sat at the wheel as the other crewmembers — Thomas and Maui Community College Sustainability Club President Chris Taylor — took turns working other parts of the vessel. The crew and passengers glided over high swells with ease, talking story and catching sea spray. Sharing a Molokai papaya, they attempted pirate jokes and talked politics. The crew made it to Molokai's East End in less than three hours' time before dropping off a passenger and heading back to Maui. Hopping out of the boat, Tracy's elation was apparent as his feet touched Molokai sand. Roundtrip, Tracy, said, the boat used a total of three gallons of gas; less than half of what it would normally take. Of course, this isn't it for the Tracy's kite sail. There are other courses to chart, and implements to develop, he says, if he is to take this technology worldwide. German company Skysails is also currently looking into using a similar technology to power cargo vessels and super-yachts. In the beginning, all Tracy wanted was "a clearer deck for running a fishing boat" than a standard catamaran could offer. Now his idea has caught the eye of green-thinking individuals and corporations worldwide. Tracy's kite boat might help make the oil slick rainbows that strangle the surface of stagnant waterways a thing of the past. It may change the sound and smell of a summer day. As for a name for his boat, Tracy is waiting for the right one, but it will definitely be in Hawaiian. Views: 5267 Rating:

Solo Salmon fishing Filming fighting netting trolling FBR Solo fishing for salmon while filming the fight..Not for the faint hearted. Hung into a salmon with a 40 pound mind trapped in a 18 pound body. It put a noble fight making several runs and solo netted while filming at the same time. I was using a lower FBR main rig and a FBR dropper rig. The salmon came on the dropper rig which should have been approximately half way to the bottom rig which was at 70 feet. I was 300 yards towards Hawaii from the Duzberry buoy green can near Duzberry Reef with is approximate; 9 miles from Bonita point and a bout 2.5 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. Great weather. It sure is nice to here the reel sing again. I can't believe how many Nice folks came by and said Hi today. Met a lot of folks on the water. Report one solo 18 pound salmon caught on a green FBR dropper Rig at approximately 35 feet. How the self-releasing trout catfish bass bait hook works. Since you aren't breaking off hooks in fish and with the TadPole snagless weights, not breaking off in rocks, you get in more fishing time because you are not down re-rigging so that gives you more time with your bait in the water and you improve your catch. This is especially important when you have kids, as you will not spend all of your time re-rigging them. It is especially a good feeling seeing them swim away. Berkley Power Bait and these hooks and TadPole make one of the most effective trout bait rig there is. Catch and keep, no problem, you get the hook out instantly, and catch and release couldn't be easier. Regarding self-releasing hooks. They are design to release fish without touching them. Basically how they work is the eye of the hook is at the bend of the hook and the leader line goes through a flexible plastic sleeve that goes over leader line and when the sleeve is slid down over the shank of the hook it is set and fish just like a regular fishhook. The sleeve has a second line tied to the top of this and parallels the main leader line and is attach by a sliding 3 turn uniknot tied with thread. When you slid the red knot up by pinching it or using a pocket comb it slides the sleeve up and the hook rotates and self releases. Hilo, Hawaii Hilo (Hee-lo) moku was a busy farming and fishing area in ancient times, then evolved into a commercial center for the sugar industry. The town of Hilo, built around the crescent-shaped bay, became the seat of county government. In 1946 it was nearly swallowed by a tsunami, and another hit in 1960. But Hilo's waterfront was rebuilt, and today downtown is an appealing area with restored clapboard buildings, good restaurants, museums, art galleries, a farmer's market and interesting little shops—all of it great for exploring on foot. Hilo, with its own international airport, is growing into a small city. It's always lush and green thanks to being blessed with generous rainfall—though some locals swear most of that must come only between bedtime and breakfast. On the outskirts of town there's more—lush parks, pocket beaches, storybook waterfalls, tropical gardens. Bring an umbrella if you wish, but definitely bring yourself to Hilo if you want a true sense of the Big Island. Views: 1796 Rating:

A King's Birthplace and Ancient Cave Dwellings, Kona Hawaii Keauhou Bay County Park/Kamehameha III Birthplace A lovely natural harbor backed by volley ball courts, canoe halau and lawn, the park and pier at Keauhou harbor is a lovely place to spend a few moments in quiet contemplation, eat a picnic lunch, or dive into the invitingly cool waters at the end of a hot day. Along the cliffs fronting the bay is a nature trail planted with native Hawai'ian healing plants with explanatory signs which runs to the birthplace of Kalani Kauikeaouli, who later became King Kamehameha III when his older brother Liholiho (Kamehameha II) died of measles in England. Legend has it that Kalani was still born, but the kahuna attending the royal birth immediately immersed him in the cold waters of a nearby spring, where he was at once revived. There are not many places in America where one can easily walk to the exact birthplace of a King, and this pleasant spot is onesuch, not to be missed. Numerous charter fishing excursions and the Fairwind Snorkel trips to Kealekekua Bay leave from this Bay. To reach Keauhou Bay, follow Kaleiopapa St. from either of its intersections with Ali'i Drive between the 5 and 6 mile markers. Full facilities include showers, restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, volleyball courts and a boat ramp. Ohi'a Lava Tube Caves/Kona Coast Scenic Overlook This scenic pullout, overlooking the Kona Coastline from Keauhou Bay north past Kailua Bay to Keahole Point, is one of the best places to watch sunset in all of Kona. It's also a grand spot for spotting whale spouts, watching canoe races and just generally taking in the Kona ambience. Directly below the scenic overlook are the numerous entrances, skylights and pits associated with the Ohia Lava Tube cave complex. Before European contact, these caves were a hub of activity and socialization for the native Hawai'ians. Used at various times as general living quarters, shade during the blazing summers and cover from infrequent storms, springs deep with in the caves also augmented scarce supplies of fresh water for Kona residents. The caves also served as places for sacred ritual and burial of important Ali'i. Today, exploration of the caves is unsafe and unsavory due to an element of homeless people and criminal activity here. Additionally, most of the accessible entrances are gated or sealed; visitors are asked to refrain from entering the caves to preserve the sanctity of native burials. Video produced by Donald MacGowan; narrated by Frank Burgess and Carmen Kinsey.
