Kahuna catches multiple Big Kahunas 10/26/08 Fishing in the Wax Lake Outlet with Sid Mixon, LLoyd Babineaux and Mark Babineaux. Sunny day, around 65 to 75 degrees with a 10 MPH west wind. We were fishing on top of sandbars in about 2 ft of water. Very good day, probably caught 25 plus fish in an hour and could have continued as long as we wanted catching one after another. Louisiana Redfish Guide Nash Roberts IV This video is a quick review of our boat's take home catch of 30 reds and 46 trout (we released another 40-50 reds on two boats...the second boat also limitted out at 15 red/5 per angler). I've fished with the father/son duo of Nash Roberts III & IV of Fishhunter Guide Service since 1995. Every single charter has been an angler's dream, with limits achieved on reds and all the trout we want (up to the limit). On this last float, Nash IV took us to not just a trout spot, but one where "nice fat trout" usually hold. Fishunter is based near Port Sulphur, Louisiana about 50 minutes southeast of New Orleans. Tony Joe White - Set The Hook - Deep Cuts album Set The Hook From Tony Joe White's new "Deep Cuts" album From The Commercial Appeal - Memphis: Tony Joe remains true to Tony Joe: White's newest album mixes classic soulful tunes with 'techno swamp' "I went into my studio with a Stratocaster, mic and my foot, and cut it all live, letting 'em out like a Delta blues singer" _____________________________________ When Goodwill, Louisiana-born singer-songwriter Tony Joe White started his career in Corpus Christi, Texas, in the mid-1960s, he performed covers - mostly blues tunes, interspersed with a few Elvis Presley songs. By the start of the next decade, Elvis was covering Tony Joe - specifically "Polk Salad Annie," White's folksy, fiery number about Louisiana life. "I heard Bobbie Gentry do 'Ode to Billie Joe,' and I said, 'Oh god, I know that life.' I told myself, if I ever do write anything, I'm gonna do like her, and write something I know about. It wasn't too much later when 'Polk' and 'Rainy Night' (in Georgia) came out," says White. "None of 'em were written for chart action or radio. I was just trying to get the pureness out of 'em," White claims of his soulful country songs, which have been recorded by the likes of Brook Benton, Dusty Springfield and Tina Turner. White currently lives in Franklin, Tennessee, but he was living off Forest Hill-Irene Road in Germantown when he got the call from Presley's camp. "His producer, Felton Jarvis, called me and said, 'Hey man, we're in Las Vegas. Elvis wants to send a plane down to pick you up.' I flew out and stayed for a week. I'd watch the show every night, and hang out backstage in Elvis' dressing room. He treated me good - it was just like talking to a friend or a brother," White recalls. While compositions like "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia" have earned him an inestimable income, White, who turns 65 in July 2008, still comes across as a grounded, unassuming North Louisiana farm boy who prefers talking about fishing, gardening and eating crawfish to music industry gossip. His outsider, cult-hero reputation has grown to mythic status in recent years, enhanced by the 1998 documentary film "Searching for Tony Joe." Indeed, he might collaborate with Lucinda Williams or Eric Clapton (heard on his last two studio efforts, 2004's The Heroines and 2006's Uncovered, respectively), but Tony Joe remains resolutely Tony Joe. "I absolutely bowed up on it," White says of uber-producer Clive Davis' attempt in the early 1980s to push him in a pop direction. "I'd written some love songs that had a beat to 'em, and Clive said, 'Choose who you want to cut with.' So me and Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper and Booker T. Jones and Jeff Porcaro met up in L.A. I thought, 'Well, golly, we can surely bring this off,' and we cut four or five cool, funky tracks. "Three weeks later, I get this package in the mail - Clive had sent the tape of the mixed product. He'd taken it to Miami and had Arif Mardin put string arrangements on it. I said, 'What did you do to that raw funk we had? We had some good stuff cut before you put the mush on it.' And Clive said that his plan all along was to make me the white Barry White!" "And that's when I started my own label, Swamp Records, because I decided that from now on, when I cut something, I want to get it to the people who care about it the way I cut it," White says. His newest album, Deep Cuts, was released on Swamp in June 2008. The 10-song album features remakes of classic-era White tracks including "Soul Francisco" and "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," as well as newer tunes like "Run with the Bulls" and "Set the Hook," updated in a menacing style the artist has dubbed "techno swamp." "I went into my studio with a Stratocaster, mic and my foot, and cut it all live, letting 'em out like a Delta blues singer on his back porch," says White. "Then my son, Jody, put it in ProTools and worked with it like a mad scientist. I wouldn't let just anyone mess with my tunes, but Jody is blood - he's been around them all his life." Describing Deep Cuts as a "delicate line of attack," White says, "It's like hearing the swamp, but it's also about the here and now. Since '69 and '70, my guitar playing has really gotten wilder and wilder. I still use a Wah Boomerang, the same 'ol Wah I used on 'Polk Salad,' and a Tonebender, an old fuzz box I found in London in '69. At first, I thought some hardcore fans would say, 'Hey man, what are you doing?' But so far, in person, people are going nuts. Even the staunch fans come up to me and say, 'Golly, what are ya'll doing? This is really frightening!'" White lets loose a deep, warm chuckle. "That's what I like to hear," he says. "The swamp should sound scary." Octopus caught by fisherman I was download old video tape to DVD and I ran across this fishing video of my friends and I on a fishing trip off the Louisiana coast. We actually caught a live octopus on a rod and reel. I have fished a long time and have never heard of this before or after. We didn't know what to do with it and certainly no one wanted to touch the thing before it finally unhooked itself. Let me know if anyone else has heard of an octopus being caught like this...
