Winter at Island Beach State Park South of Seaside Park, and north of Barnegat Inlet, Island Beach State Park is one of the treasures of the Jersey Shore. Nine miles of natural barrier island, this park encompasses some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. The natural, unspoiled beauty of this park is a vast contrast to much of the over-developed shore. Vast dunes covered with goldenrod, beach plum and black cherry delight the eye. Magnificent beaches offer natural splendor for swimming or surf fishing. Miles of bay-side wetlands are a naturalist's delight. Activities permitted include swimming, fishing, limited boat launching, hiking, horseback riding, nature trails, and canoeing. Views: 1828 Rating:

Oahu, Fishing - Tom Barefoot Visit http://www.tombarefoot.com for more information. Fishing in Oahu - Oahu is a great place for fishing particularly off the western facing shores and the waters directly out to sea from Waikiki. Most of our charter boats will depart from Kewalo Basin. The water gets very deep very fast off this coastline so it's a good place to find the big fish. One of the most often used fishing strategies is to follow the coastline north at about the 1000 fathom depth line in route toward Kaena Point. This is the "fishing zone" for the big fish coming from great depths. A fishing boat can easily travel about 30 miles up the coastline before reaching the half-way point on a full day charter an so a lot of ocean can be covered. Another tack is to head out to the relatively shallow fishing grounds called the Pinnacles or another called Penguin Banks which lie south of Oahu. Each day requires a different call by your captain and much of the choice for the days best catch is likely to be based upon the previous days conditions and success rate. Views: 133 Rating:

Aral Sea Catastrophe Death of Aral Sea, winds rise and spread the bottom salt on hundreds of kilometers around. Aral a once-large saltwater lake straddling the boundary between Kazakstan to the north and Uzbekistan to the south. The shallow Aral Sea was formerly the world's fourth largest body of inland water. It nestles in the climatically inhospitable heart of Central Asia, to the east of the Caspian Sea. The Aral Sea is of great interest and increasing concern to scientists because of the remarkable shrinkage of its area and volume in the second half of the 20th century. This change is due primarily to the diversion (for purposes of irrigation) of the riverine waters of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya, which discharge into the Aral Sea and are its main sources of inflowing water. The sea's northern shore—high in some places, low in others—was indented by several large bays. The low-lying and irregular eastern shores were interrupted in the north by the huge delta of the Syr Darya and in the south were bordered by a wide tract of shallow water. The equally vast Amu Darya delta lay on the lake's southern shore, and along the lake's western periphery extended the almost unbroken eastern edge of the 820-foot- (250-metre-) high Ustyurt Plateau. Shrinkage of the Aral Sea, 1960--99.From about 1960 the Aral Sea's water level was systematically and drastically reduced because of the diversion of water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers for purposes of agricultural irrigation. As the Soviet government converted large acreages of pastures or untilled lands in Uzbekistan, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, and elsewhere into irrigated farmlands by using the waters of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, the amount of water from these rivers that reached the Aral Sea dropped accordingly. By the 1980s, during the summer months, the two great rivers virtually dried up before they reached the lake. The Aral Sea began to quickly shrink because of the evaporation of its now-unreplenished waters. By the late 1980s, the lake had lost more than half the volume of its water. The salt and mineral content of the lake rose drastically because of this, making the water unfit for drinking purposes and killing off the once-abundant supplies of sturgeon, carp, barbel, roach, and other fishes in the lake. The fishing industry along the Aral Sea was thus virtually destroyed. The ports of Aral in the northeast and Mŭynoq in the south were now many miles from the lake's shore. A partial depopulation of the areas along the lake's former shoreline ensued. The contraction of the Aral Sea also made the local climate noticeably harsher, with more extreme winter and summer temperatures. By 1989 the Aral Sea had receded to form two separate parts, the "Greater Sea" in the south and the "Lesser Sea" in the north, each of which had a salinity almost triple that of the sea in the 1950s. In the late 1990s an island in the Aral Sea, Vozrozhdenya, became the centre of environmental concern. This was of special concern because Vozrozhdenya had been a testing ground for Soviet biological weapons during the Cold War. In addition to testing done there on such agents as tularemia and the bubonic plague, hundreds of tons of live anthrax bacteria were buried on the island in the 1980s. In 1999 still-living anthrax spores were discovered on the site, and scientists feared that when the island was no longer surrounded by water, land vertebrates could carry anthrax to populated areas. Other environmental problems plagued the region as well. By the end of the century the Aral had receded into three separate lakes. The level of the sea had dropped to 125 feet (36 metres) above sea level, and the water volume was reduced by 75 percent of what it had been in 1960. Almost no water from the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya reached the sea, and, unless drastic action were taken, it seemed likely that the Aral Sea could disappear within 20 to 30 years, leaving a large desert in its place. The health costs to people living in the area were beginning to emerge. Hardest hit were the Karakalpaks, who live in the southern portion of the region. Exposed seabeds led to dust storms that blew across the region, carrying a toxic dust contaminated with salt, fertilizer, and pesticides. Health problems occurred at unusually high rates—from throat cancers to anemia and kidney diseases. Infant mortality in the region was among the highest in the world. Views: 20868 Rating:

Charlestown Rhode Island (RI) Real Estate Tour http://www.charlestownrihomes.com Tour Charlestown, RI neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices. Charlestown, Rhode Island is located along the southern shore of the state, approximately equidistant from New London, Connecticut and Providence. The lands of the Narragansett Tribe of Indians, approximately 1,900 acres, are almost entirely surrounded by Charlestown and adjoin Richmond to the north. Charlestown's landscape is divided by a ridge of steeply rolling hills (glacial moraine) that run north of U.S. Route 1 parallel to the shore. The flat, sandy coastal area extends roughly from Route 1 South to Block Island Sound. North of the moraine, the terrain is more gentle with large wetlands such as the Cedar Swamp and open water bodies such as Watchaug, Schoolhouse, and Pasquiset Ponds. Charlestown's northern boundary is defined by the Pawcatuck River. The unusually large amount of conservation and recreation land in Charlestown reflects the abundance of important natural resources in the town. Burlingame State Park, Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, Ninigret Park, and East Beach comprise approximately 20 percent of the total land area and protect wetlands, fresh and salt ponds, a barrier beach system, and other valuable habitats. The waters of Charlestown are perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, and exploring. For other town tours visit http://www.virtualhomes.com . For towns in RI visit http://www.ri-virtualhomes.com . Exploring The Platte River The Platte River is one of my favorite rivers in Michigan. Even though it is not the best fishing river in Michigan, it is perfect for the family. The current is gentle, the water is pure, and the fun factor is awesome. Now dont be fooled, there is good fishing to be had. The river and its system of inter-connecting lakes hosts brown trout, rainbow trout, steelhead, pike, salmon, pan-fish, bass, gar, perch, walleye, lake trout, and etc. This year we were too early for the salmon-run, so my brother and I focused on fly-fishing for pan-fish. And my friends, we caught them by the hordes. Granted they were small, but the action and fun-factor is to be cherished. We were purely using dry flies, and the strikes were frequent and often. The family loves the river too. They swim and explore all day long. At the end of the trip, you find yourselves in a sea of sand dunes. There is no surprise that this is all designated NATIONAL SEA SHORE on Lake Michigan. You are right in the middle of Sleeping Bear Dunes. The Malibu Mini X yet explores another body of water. Great fun for all. bitter Views: 525 Rating:

Tour Guide Hawaii Presents: Kahalu'u Beach Park, Big Island Loll in sand and sun under swaying palms, watch humpback whales dance in an exotic Kona sunset, snorkel among rainbow-colored fish on a protected reef or ride surf where the Kings of Hawai'i defined the sport a thousand years ago! Kahalu'u is the crown jewel of Kona Coast County Beach Parks. Abundant parking, disabled access, picnic tables, two shaded pavilions, two sets of public restrooms, showers and lifeguards round-out the facilities of this beautiful beach park. Most days there is a food wagon selling sandwiches, burgers, shave ice and cold drinks at reasonable prices and a vendor renting snorkeling gear and boogy boards. This beach can be crowded on weekends, but there is always room for another snorkeler in the water. This is the premiere snorkeling beach of the Island of Hawai'i; protected from the open sea by a jetty, the reef is also protected against commercial aquarium fishing. Thus, the snorkeling is in calm, shallow water; frequently during low tide, one can actually walk to the jetty, a couple hundred feet offshore. Also, there is an abundance of fish of an enormous variety...perhaps the best display on the island. For these two reasons, Kahalu'u is where many visitors head for their introduction to snorkeling. Dozens of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and a few Hawksbill Sea Turtles call this bay home, eating the limu and thrilling the snorkelers. Numerous freshwater springs and shallow water bathers make the near-shore snorkeling unpleasantly cloudy, but about 50 feet offshore the water turns crystal clear and the display of coral is nothing short of amazing. Outside the breakwater one may occasionally see deepwater species such as marlin, tuna, dolphin and small sharks. Towards the south, where the bay shallows to a series of tide pools, many species of shrimp and seaweed not commonly seen in West Hawai'i are abundant. Northward, and outside the bay, is an excellent surf break that is for intermediate or better surfers and boogy boarders. There is a fair current north out of the bay and along the coast...swimmers caught in this current should relax and swim with the current, angling towards land...they will come to shore a few hundred yards north of Kahalu'u and be able to walk back along the road. The breakwater predates the 15th century temple complexes in the area and is widely said to have been built by the menehune (sort of the Hawai'ian equivalent to leprechauns), but building was actually initiated to enclose the bay as a fishpond. Whether the work became beyond the powers of the Ali'i at the time to administrate or the surfing faction won-out in the battle over use of Kahalu'u Bay is not known, but the breakwater was already in disarray at the time of European contact in the 18th century. Bermudians Protest Fisheries Agency of Japan Boat "Today Bermudians demonstrated in front of a Fisheries of Japan patrol boat tied on the Hamilton harbourfront. The demonstration was against the Fisheries Agency of Japan, the government-owned agency responsible for the whaling campaign in the Antarctic where over a thousand whales are being targeted for 'scientific research'. The whale meat is sold commercially. Surveys show that only 1% of Japanese regularly eat whale meat- only 11% support whaling at all. The Japanese cannot sell the whale meat they already have. More than 4,800 tons of surplus whale meat is stockpiled in freezers. Only 1% of Japanese eat whale meat, which is highly toxic, and only 11% support whaling." "I saw a humpback off South Shore today, and another two yesterday. These humpbacks could be targeted for 'research' by the Fisheries Agency of Japan. Despite a moratorium on commercial whaling enacted by the International Whaling Commission in 1986, the Japanese have been hunting whales in increasing numbers. Japan has exploited a loophole that allows member states to kill whales for scientific research." "Japan has been 'researching' whales with great effectiveness, killing more than 25,000 whales in the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. This year the Japanese added 50 humpbacks and 50 fin whales to the 935 minke whales included in the self-imposed total number of whales to be targeted for their 'research'." "The "Mihama" is a patrol boat belonging to the Fisheries Agency of Japan. These patrol boats are supposed to monitor Japanese long line tuna fishing fleets to ensure they are not over fishing. When the same Fisheries Agency of Japan tells us that they are killing a thousand whales annually for scientific research, they lose any semblance of credibility. How can we believe that a patrol vessel such as this actually monitors the Japanese fishing fleets? It's like setting out the fox to guard the chickens." "We have already lost 90% of the pelagic predator fish stocks including marlin, tuna, swordfish, and the great sharks that existed before 1950. 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. Their bodies are thrown overboard, often alive. Half the world's reefs are dead or dying. If the current trends of over fishing continue, every fishery will collapse by 2048." "We need to raise our awareness of what is happening out in our oceans. The high seas are not governed by any single nation, which means the rules pertaining to marine life are often complicated and difficult if not impossible to police. Out of sight, out of mind. We can no longer remain in denial. The world's marine life is on the brink of collapse. Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Whale sanctuary is just the tip of the iceberg. Continued plundering of our ocean environment based on greed, cultural traditions or national pride needs to become a thing of the past. Today's oceans are in great peril. If the oceans die, we die." "This afternoon my 4-year old daughter Elsa offered the captain and crew of the Fisheries Agency of Japan patrol vessel 'Mihama' her humpback whale in token of our appreciation that the 50 humpback whales were taken off their list of targeted whales. Perhaps when a Fisheries Agency of Japan patrol vessel comes back we will be able to offer the crew a minke and fin whale." "The captain and crew of the 'Mihama' did not accept the whale." Rattlesnake Lake in King County Another five star selective fisheries lake. Beautiful views, great fishing, no gas motors. One of my favorite destinations. Mike Rattlesnake Lake (50-100 acres): Rattlesnake is located close to Cedar Falls, south of North Bend (I-90 exit to 436th SE). Highly variable springs cause this unusual lake to fluctuate greatly in volume and surface area through the summer months. A park on the east shore has pit toilets and a primitive boat ramp. The lake is managed for rainbow trout, with fish to 15 inches taken. Selective fishery regulations are in effect, except electric motors are allowed. Views: 1225 Rating:

Our trip to Cliff Lake in the Northern Maine Woods Our trip to the Northern Maine Woods A long time friend kindly invited us to go on an adventure with them. We spent Saturday afternoon preparing for the trip and packing the jeep with camping gear, canoe and seven days worth of food and supplies. We left at midnight in the pouring rain. to meet our friends in Skowhegan, Maine, 1.5 hours away. Just after dawn we crossed the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. It took us 9-hours (including checking in at the gate to the N.M.W and check in at camp office and some site seeing) to get to our Cabin on Cliff Lake, 3.5 hours of logging roads. By 10am Sunday morning we had our Cabin all set up and the 4 of us took a 3-hour nap. We got up and had some grub and piled into one boat and explored the 2 attached lakes. We found the lake to be the home of 4-6 loons, some seagulls, ravens, many kingfishers and an eagle. That night we watched the beautiful sunset from the porch of our cabin. Monday we spent our day fishing and exploring the lakes and in the evening we towed our canoes across both lakes to explore the tributaries. We motored in as far as we could, transferred to the canoes and paddled until we couldnt go any farther. Tuesday was a rainy day so we went and explored Haymock and Spider lakes. At Haymock we heard eagles and at Spider Lake we watched a Juvie and an Adult Eagle fly around together through binoculars. Wednesday, Peggy and I tried to watch the sunrise behind the cliff, from the boat on the lake. Before the sun rose, the fog rose. We had to wait for the sun to come up (2-hours) before we could find our way back to camp. We started about a mile south of the camp and had drifted over a mile north of the camp. We returned to camp got warm and napped a few hours. Spent the rest of the day fishing with no luck. With binoculars I watched the eagle of the lake catch a fish.. The Loons were just a squawking while the eagle fished.. Thursday the 4 of us ventured another hour north to Mooseleuk Lake. The last mile in was 4 wheel drive only so we drove in unloaded our gear and canoe, and went back out to get our friends, who only had a car. As soon as we got there the 4 of us walked down to the water and there was a Moose in the river, and here baby was on shore. We paddled our canoes 2 hours into the tributaries, and saw, such beautiful views of mountains, kingfishers and moose. On our way back to the landing Peggy and I were first. We came across a moose to our left in the water and then heard a baby moose crying to our right. Mom crossed in front of us and went up the bank to get her baby. As we drifted along she reappeared in front of us, stared us down and jumped into the water. I grabbed at grasses to stop our canoe so she could cross with her baby about 40 feet away from us. That night we ate dinner at the campsite at Mooseleuk and made our way back in the dark. The last 2 days we spent fishing, and exploring both the lake and the woods around it. The sunsets were beautiful and the sounds of the loons and eagle so serene. Fishing with an Eagle was just amazing.. Thank you Dan and Kathy we had A great Time.. Views: 637 Rating:
