Florida Keys Scuba Diving - Fishing Vication The Florida Keys is an archipelago of about 1700 islands in the southeast United States. They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 98 miles (157 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude, in the subtropics. The climate of the Keys however, is defined as tropical according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, primarily in the city of Islandia, Florida. The total land area is 355.6 km² (137.3 sq mi). As of the 2000 census the population was 79535, with an average density of 223.66/km² (579.27/sq mi), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County, which consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas. Availity Boca Grande 2009 Twenty Availity anglers descended upon the tropical waters of Boca Grande for a weekend of fishing - three Bayboats, two Skiffs, and a Mothership (Conita IV). Several anglers cruised down from Tampa to Cabbage Key aboard the Conita with the remaining anglers arriving by car and trailered boats to the Beachhouse Lodge in Bokeelia (Pine Island). The Tarpon bite was weak with fish dispersed along the beaches, sound, and the hill (harbor). The crews made an on-scene real-time decision to relocate from the Boca Grande Pass and focus fishing efforts on Snook along the Cayo Costa beaches. I do not mean to give that impression. Fishing for shark, tarpon, amberjack, cobia, etc. from kayaks is NOT for the uninitiated. There are real risks, and real dangers involved. Sure, it's exciting, but it is "extreme kayak fishing". When you go after these species and other large species, you are dealing with an apex predator that is capable of putting a real hurt on you when things go wrong. You need to know the risks, and be prepared... and even then, things can still go wrong. If you are thinking about doing extreme kayak fishing, then you need to understand that you are taking the risks upon yourself. I understand that, and accept that. I am not new to kayaking. I have been kayaking for about 15 years, and have experienced extreme conditions of wind, waves, weather, and currents. I am fairly new to kayak fishing - only the last few years - but I bring my years of kayaking experience to the sport of kayak fishing. Any kayak fisher, fishing in any water, can encounter dangers.
