fishing for leatherback turtles With most of the sharks and tuna being overfished, the next best thing in the sea is large turtles. They taste just like chicken. The best part is that it is a total rush yanking one of these beasts in. we caught this one about 2 miles from block island, RI on 10-18-07 on a red plastic balloon. Turtles are pretty easy to catch, you just put a jelly fish on a hook and suspend it in the water. Sometimes when we are feeling sporty, we go with artificals and jig a plastic bag filled with water, looks like the real thing you know. so anyway, we were really just fishing for tuna and the the turtle came up and got hooked in a balloon holding up the bait. He popped his head up and was starting at the balloon for a minute until he saw us, then he took off. Unforutnatly, when he took off, he got tangled in teh line and kept pulling it until he was hooked. We pulled him in and resolved the issue which meant snapping the line as the attempt at unhooking was just taking to long. Later in teh day, we looked under the boat, there were millions of little translucent jellyfish about 1" long that were packed in tightly all along the area. You would have never noticed them unless your face was about a foot away as they were so clear and small. Alaska is one of two U.S. states not bordered by another state, Hawaii being the other. Alaska has more coastline than all the other U.S. states combined.[6] It is the only non-contiguous U.S. state on continental North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of British Columbia (Canada) separate Alaska from Washington state. Alaska is thus an exclave of the United States. It is technically part of the continental U.S., but is often not included in colloquial use; Alaska is not part of the contiguous U.S., often called "the Lower 48".[7] Juneau, Alaska's capital city, though located on the mainland of the North American continent, is inaccessible by land—no roads connect Juneau to the rest of the North American highway system. The state is bordered by the Yukon Territory and British Columbia, Canada, to the east, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska's territorial waters touch Russia's territorial waters in the Bering Strait, though the Russian and Alaskan islands are almost 3 miles (4.8 km) apart. Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,380 square miles (1,477,277 km2), more than twice as large as Texas, the next largest state. Geologists have identified Alaska as part of Wrangellia, a large region consisting of multiple states and Canadian provinces in the Pacific Northwest which is actively undergoing continent building. It is larger than all but 18 sovereign countries. Counting territorial waters, Alaska is larger than the combined area of the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana. It is also larger than the combined area of the 23 smallest U.S. States and Districts: Washington, D.C., Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maryland, West Virginia, South Carolina, Maine, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and North Carolina. It is known for wet and stormy weather, tundra landscapes, and large populations of salmon, brown bear, caribou, birds, and marine mammals. Except for the very northernmost part of the Alaska Peninsula, southwestern Alaska is almost completely treeless, due to the almost constant high winds. * The Alaska Interior is home to Fairbanks. The geography is marked by large braided rivers, such as the Yukon River and the Kuskokwim River, as well as Arctic tundra lands and shorelines. * The Alaskan Bush is the remote, less crowded part of the state, encompassing 380 native villages and small towns such as Nome, Bethel, Kotzebue and, most famously, Barrow, the northernmost town in the United States, as well as the northern most town on the contiguous North American continent (cities in Greenland, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut that are farther north are on islands).
