Deformed Young Betta (Serpico)
PLEASE READ: the story of little "Serpico"... About a month ago when I was cleaning the grow-out tank, I found a tiny little fry that had gotten stuck INSIDE the filter (which I had thought was well-enough protected with mesh). Anyway, I managed to rescue this little chap and put him in a tank of his own to recover. Over the past couple of weeks I got really attached to him and I let my boyfriend name him "Serpico" - I promised that I would never sell him and I'd let him be my boyfriend's special fish. Well, "Serpico" was about half the size of his spawn siblings but he soon started to catch up. He's still quite small however as he got older it became more and more apparent that he had a spine deformity, which I am 99% certain was due to getting stuck in the filter and being damaged when he was very young. I was hoping that as he grew older his back would heal and return to normal. Sadly, this is not the case. He cannot swim properly and the curve in his spine is so severe that I would be surprised if he was not in a moderate amount of pain. Even though I am very attached to this little fish (another reminder why I really shouldn't give them names) - I love him enough to let him go. It is sad... but not as sad as watching him suffer anymore. Within the next hour or so he'll be resting in peace. In this case, I think Clove Oil is the only humane option. He'll be missed but at least I have this video to remember him. :( Would I ever sell or breed a betta like this? NO!!! NEVER in a MILLION YEARS! Even though I'm pretty sure it's not a genetic fault, the stress of breeding is too much for him to go through. If, on the very slim chance that it was genetic, breeding him would only risk producing more deformed bettas and I certainly don't see the point of such a silly "experiment" where the offspring would just have to be culled anyway. It's better to be responsible and not go out of your way to introduce deformed youngsters into the world and then to have to kill them all when they are a couple of months old. Furthermore, I wouldn't dream of selling such a deformed betta for profit as a "snake-fish betta" or some other stupid name and I would hope that people were smart enough not to buy fish with similar deformities, because it is a vicious cycle.
