Salmon Fishing Turns Into Whale Watching We were salmon fishing off of Vancouver Island (Sooke) when a pod of whales joined us. We caught a 22 pound salmon and came closer to the whales than the whale watching ships could. It was awesome to be so close to the whales and the fresh salmon was outstanding! Halibut and Salmon Fishing in Port Renfrew, BC with Hind Sight Fishing Charters September 10, 2009, the boys from Sooke, BC drove over to Port Renfrew for a full day of fishing with John Wells, fishing guide and owner of Hindsight Fishing Charters. We headed out about 10 miles to Swiftsure bank where we saw 15 Humpbacks, two which fully breached out of the water, and thousands of birds and sea lions.
