Fishing report for the week ending 1/9/2011

Its january and yes we are working around the weather, as I am writing this report today was almost 8o degrees with a 15 mph south wind. Tomorrow the wind will be west and the next day north 20, its been challenging but we have had our share of good days of weather and fishing. This time of year tides and water temperature are key, if you can get higher water and any water temperature above 60 the fish react good to these days. The past month or so we will get 1 or 2 days a week where conditions are not ideal, hey its January.

I am back at Fish Tale marina on Estero Bay and the schooling size trout are back towards the brackish water away from the pass, the trick is to find the deeper holes where they can be stacked on top of each other. The trout are not everywhere but when you find them there"s plenty of action, you have to catch a fair number of sub 15 inch fish to get the legal ones but they are there. My mainstay this time of year a white redfish magic is working well presented slowly near the bottom, suspending plugs and a live shrimp under a popping cork will get good results also. There have been good numbers of ladyfish and a few jacks that always keep things interesting. I have seen fewer small redfish this week, but they are still around.

If you can pick your days, days before the fronts are always better than after. Get out and fish!

Its not to early to book your Tarpon trips for this season, prime months are mid April thru July.
