Fellow Anglers,
Had the Tom Tanacredi from Aberdeen party out this morning for a day of Fluke fishing. My mate and I had all the ammunition for whatever was coming our way........Peruvian Smelts, fresh Peanut Bunker, Squid, Sand Eels you name it we just about had for bait. We had an incoming tide (which I'm not crazy about) but we worked with it AND a light southwest wind that I knew would help slow down our drift in the Ambrose Channel.
Our first drift produced a nice fat and plump 3 lb'er for our efforts. Then we caught another 4 lb'er after we retraced our initial drift..........so far so good I thought. On our 4 or 5th drift in the same tight area of the channel we caught a really nice 5.4 lb. beauty of a fluke. My mate and I looked at each other and thought "this could be one of those really banner days" but I guess it was not meant to be.
The day actually turned out to be quite slow after out first couple of drifts, which then produced only a handful of shorts, a couple of sea robbins and a dogfish or two. All our great expectations after those first 3 fish did not materialize and we had to, once again, hunt around to try and piece together a somewhat respectable trip. Got a bunch of calls on my cell phone from friends fishing many areas yesterday and got some good reports and some not so good. One good call was from my friends Bruce and Bill on the Cinsan as they fished an area called "twin sticks" . So me and my group sailed over to that area only to find an armada of boats and not many fish left.
All in all, not a very productive day in quantity, but the fish we did get from the Ambrose were really nice and fat fish as it seems the Ambrose is just now starting to produce some "quality" fish which is what Reel Fun Charters always tries to target. I know there are still some "doormats" to be taken from the Ambrose from now thru the send of the season and that's probably where I'll be concentrating most of my efforts.
