We had the Steve Tokarzewski party out for a morning of fluke fishing looking for "the big kuhuna" for a tournament that his group was in, but unfortunately the big guy was not to be today as we caught over 30 NJ legal fish drifting numerous spots in the Ambrose Channel. Although many of our fish were NJ keeper legal, the NY keeper size eluded us over and over with 20 - 20.5 inch fish and very fat too. We fished waters that were 62 to 85 ft deep as well as the Ambrose flats along both red and green side of the channel catching many fat and plump fish but not something in the 8 - 9 lb range they need for winning a tournament.
Our baits of choice today was squid/smelt comb, fresh peanut bunker and whole squid. We fished the end of incoming, through the slack and then outgoing tides in near perfect drifting conditions. So far in 2010, Ambrose Channel is not living up to what I normally see for this time of year.
Congrats to Steve and the crew as they fished hard to find that one grand prize winner. Thank you for choosing Reel Fun Sportfishing and hope we gave it our best try too.
