Yesterday I was on Mosquito Lagoon to do some scouting for reds to be sure I was on my game for upcoming charters. First thing I ran down to where the black drum have been holding since late last summer. As I shut down the skiff and jumped on the poling platform I could see pushes of fish over 100 yards out. I knew it was either redfish or the blacks. As I got closer, sure enough it was school after school of black drum! Being a saturday I knew the fish would be quite spooky, so I approached as quiet as could be.

My guess was at least 5 or 6 schools with over 75 fish in each. I managed to hook one on a stinky dead shrimp before leaving them alone to target this week.

Redfish are still all throughout the backcountry and are in certain areas with other one's holding absolutely nothing! Knowing where the fish are is half the battle and on my recent charters we've been averaging around 20 reds per trip and up.

Give me a shout to see North America's most diverse estuary....Mosquito Lagoon!!
