Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

Noel Gyger

February 20 to February 27, 2011

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather very cold all week. Warmer on the weekend.

The Skeena River is in good shape but full of ice flows and frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on the ice ledges! There may be some Steelhead wintering over in some locations but just too cold to fish now. The Trout and Dolly Varden Char are available year round.

The Kalum River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is excellent when it is not so cold.

The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in fair shape and fishing for Steelhead is poor due to the freezing weather. The upper section closed for fishing on January 1st.

The Lakelse River is in fair shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is fair but too cold to fish now. Lake ice fishing is good. Cold weather does not seem to deter the ice fishermen. Beware of thin ice!

Kitimat River; Ariel Kuppers reports that the Kitimat River is iced up along the edges in the faster moving water and completely frozen over in the sections where the current is slower. Ariel also reports -20 degree temperatures. The only facts to report this week is that the Kitimat River is iced up and it is too cold to fish.

Douglas Channel; Dorothy from MK Bay reports cold temperatures and nasty winter conditions have discouraged even the Hard Core anglers such as Victor Lick. Victor is as eager an angler as you will find in our area and he visited the marina and went home. Halibut will open March 1st. Important Halibut Information in this Report. Check out the Ron Wakita report below. Prince Rupert: Sorry no report from Prince Rupert this week. If you would like to book a comfortable, warm Charter Boat for Winter Chinook and Dungeness Crab in Kitimat or Prince Rupert please contact me noel@noelgyger.ca anytime.

There is a New! guiding and fishing destination for 2011 being developed in the far northwest of BC and Alaska Rivers where you can: "fly fish for and catch salmon, steelhead and trout until your arms will feel like they will fall off!" Help me plan my guided fishing trip

What do I want to fish for (Salmon, Steelhead or Trout)? When is the best time? What is the best way to fish for them? How long is the guided day? Do we fish from a boat or walk and wade? What kind of boats do the guides use (drift boat, jet boat or raft, etc)? What have other anglers caught at this time? Are there any pictures? What was the biggest fish? What was the weather like? How do I get there? What do I need to bring? Are there any testimonials? YES, go here http://www.noelgyger.ca/testimonials.htm for testimonials.

To start to answer any of the above questions and more please check out the Past Fishing Reports webpage at http://www.noelgyger.ca/past-fishing-reports.htm There are links there that go back to fishing reports from 1996 right up until today. Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I've been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we've noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren't using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer. noel@noelgyger.ca

About The Author: Captain Noel Gyger

Company: Noel Gyger Guided Fishing Adventures

Area Reporting: Northwest British Columbia Canada

Bio: My fishing and guiding history I was born in Smithers, B.C. Canada on December 25, 1946. I grew up there and fished the whole northwest area with my Grandpa, Percival (Percy) Benjamin Emerson. He loved to fly fish. His favorite Trout fly was the Royal Coachman. He built a cabin on Babine Lake where I spent most of my summer school holidays fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Thanks to him, I am hooked on "Sportfishing" and I've come to love every aspect of it. My lifetime goals are to save the wild Salmon, Steelhead and Trout of the entire northwest area of British Columbia and establish a "Quality" sport fishing guiding industry. These are lofty goals but I will strive every day to achieve them. They are "my life long calling". I have been married for 39 years and have three daughters and seven grandchildren. I am the owner of Noel Gyger - Weekly Fishing Report and Guided Fishing Adventures of 4012 Best Street, Terrace, BC Canada V8G 5R8 Tel/Fax (250) 635-2568 Cell (250) 631-2678 E-mail noel@noelgyger.ca Website www.noelgyger.ca I started fishing the Terrace area in the 1970's. On May 24, 1983 I assisted my friend to land an 83-pound Chinook on the Kalum River. It was the river record. That experience changed my life and I started into the fish guiding industry and began exploring and fishing rivers by jet boat. I pioneered drift boats on the Kalum and Kitimat Rivers and taught many folks how to row them. I've owned a fishing lodge and guide business (Northwest Fishing Guides & Lodge) along with my wife from 1986 to 2001 when we sold it and retired but my love for the industry is just too great and after five years - I am back.
