There was ice in the boat when I left the house yesterday morning but the wind was under 15 knots and the sun was supposed to come out. Those were much better conditions than we have had in at least a week. The only thing we haven't seen in Jacksonville Florida is snow. Unlike everywhere else in the country.

It was a beautiful day and I was fishing despite the water temperature having dipped once again this winter below 50 degrees. What I wanted to catch just wasn't going to happen this morning.

The Reds in this one creek were stacked up like fire wood. The water was so clear you could see them 4 feet down. There they were all nudged up against a small oyster mound side by side like someone placed them there one by one. The best count I could get was 13. And they were in the 6 to 8 pound range.

For 2 hours I tried to feed those fish and never could get as much as a look. The only time they moved was when I would drop bait on one of there backs. That will drive you crazy. I will be seeing those fish in my dreams for the next few nights.

The 6 degree water temperature drop since last week just put them in a funk for a few days. They will start feeding again anytime I'm sure…

So in order to not go home with out having caught a fish it was off to throwing plastics for some of those cold water Trout. First spot only gave us one sniff after at least 100 casts. So off to another spot. Ten casts in we had our first fish of the day. About a 2 pound Trout and a welcome sight along with cleaning the skunk out of the boat. So we worked and worked that area only to end up with four Trout.

It was a long morning but some times fishing is that way. It was still a beautiful day even though the fish didn't think so and we did at least end up catching a few fish.

Bio: Being a native of Northeast Florida I have enjoyed the excellent fishing and wildlife this area has to offer. I have been fishing the Jacksonville Florida area over 30 years with many a memorable fishing trip starting when I was a kid. We are in between and only minutes away from Amelia Island and St. Augustine, we can enjoy the fishing any direction. From downtown to the mouth of the ocean and all the back water in between.
