Looking back at the last couple months I am disappointed to say that the dolphin or mahi mahi action has not been what we are used to seeing during the summer months in South Florida. More often than not boats are running around for hours with little or nothing to show for their efforts. There have been some good days mixed in but not like years of the past.
Anglers that have been willing to put their dolphin plans aside and seek other species have been well compensated for their efforts. Among the species that have picked up the slack are bonito, kingfish, mutton snapper, and other hard fighting reef fish.
Last weekend I had a last minute cancellation so I decided to give an old friend a call and head out anyway. My goal was to put him on some of the nice fish that have been patrolling the reefs lately. We decided to quit after only half a day because we knew that we would be cleaning fish for a good while.
Among the fish that we landed were a couple of kings up to 30#, one african pompano over 20#, and finally a nice cobia also in the 20# range. Besides these larger fish we also released countless bonito and a couple of nice amberjack.
As you can see fishing is still quite good especially if plans are flexible and you put in the time. Fishing should continue to improve as we start moving toward the cooler months. Fall will also start providing all of us with a nice influx of bait.
If you're thinking about heading out in September or October, I still have several open dates including some scattered Saturdays and Sundays.
Tight Lines,
