i first got this real about 9-10 years ago. and with taking care of it it lasted up to bout last year. i had the 4000 series spooled it with 20lbs power pro and caught a lot of very large fish from tarpon to snook to snapper to reds even bass and fresh water cats. the drag is amazingly smooth and the real ( if you take care of it) will last a very long time, the only issue iv found was that when i bought it 9-10 years ago it only cost me 70$ at walmart. now i cant find it under 100$.... yes its worth the price but i would rather pay 70 then 100. other then that i love it and i wouldn't buy any other real, long lasting dependable and can take tons of abuse. i recommend this real to all.

This is the best reel for the price and its a lot better than many higher end reels for sure. The drag rating is one of the best features and is very smooth. I have a 4000 and a 8000, 2 different animals but both gets the job done effortlessly. My 4000 is on a Tica UEHA 8 ft rod loaded with 20 lbs power pro. I can throw a A17 and almost spool my line. Around 150 yds. People around me were awed at the long range for a 8 ft'er, kept asking what my set up was. Gorilla blues are no match for my 4000, can do it all day long. My 8000 is a real work horse, got 50 lb power pro and never, ever, never had a tangle or wind knot, amazingly enough neither has my 4000 on lighter line. 8000's drag is as smooth as anything I have ever used before and very predictable. No Striper can get away with my 8000, occasional dunking, just rinse off with fresh water after each use and lube after a hard day. Half the time I don't even rinse it and never skips a beat. Its seen plenty of beach and sand. Only downside is I notice the line won't automatically find the line roller but I have a habit of checking it before I reel in so not a big factor for me. Why not 5 stars? Well you have to really impress me for years and years of hard use, I'm just not at that point...yet.

What can I say about this reel its great! I hooked a Tarpon around 200lbs and the reel held up like a champ. Caught a big sailfish with it also and loads of kings just a great reel!

Rating: Great, But Prefer Fin-Nor

This real does the job just fine and it very comparable to some of the other more expensive reels. I recommend you test out a Fin-Nor though before buying this. The Fin-Nor is in a class of it's own and you can get it for roughly the same price if you shop around. Good Luck

Rating: Love it For Offshore - Much Better Than Baitrunner

This reel is much better than the Baitrunner as stated by a previous user. Never did like the baitrunner feature. I have the biggest model they make with 20lb test and use it for big dolphin, kingfish, cobia, etc. It is a great buy for the price. I am considering going braid on this.

So far so good. I've only owned this reel a little longer then a month, so I can't honestly say how well its going to hold out as time passes. But, I have made about 8 trips with it so far either plugging/clamming from the surf, or fishing from the bays. And its worked great. Drag is very smooth, and it has an all out smooth retrieve, great reel for the price in my honest opinion. I have the FA Model. Like I said I can't say how it performs after years pass because I simply haven't owned it that long, but I can say for the month I've owned it I don't have any regrets what so ever in buying the shimano spheros. By the way If you plan to use the reel for plugging/clamming I recommend the size 8000, just spool that badboy up with some 20lb braid, and your good to go.
