Jan. 31, 2009 UPDATE!
The Kona deep sea fishing continues to be excellent'this winter for Blue Marlin, striped Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi. This is the best winter Kona Marlin fishing in a decade. Our air temps are at 83 and the water temps are 78 degrees making this a great time for Blue Marlin and other big game fishing off Kona Hawaii. Also, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers and are seen on most of our charters now. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the best water in Hawaii.
The last few days have been mirror opposites in terms of fishing. On Jan. 29, David Puckett from Prineville, Oregon lived his dream fishing day. David had chartered HighNoon for a full day charter and we had 5 screaming Blue Marlin bites while releasing one about 300 lbs after an hour fight on 50 lb stand up gear. We also lost one about 700 lbs earlier in the day. That same day, two Blue Marlin were weighed in by the Kona fishing fleet...one at 914 lbs and the other 702 lbs. The next day, not one blue Marlin made the scales in Kona. Talk about going from red hot to ice cold in one day! On January 28, Dale from Placerville, California and his wife chartered HighNoon for a full day of fishing. We got Dale some good action on live bait.....but not what he expected. Three times we live baited skipjack tuna only to have big sharks grab these baits meant for Marlin. However the action was heavy and Dale enjoyed tangling with these big whitetip Sharks. We have landed two 500 lb plus Blue Marlin the past few weeks and this January has seen the best blue marlin fishing in decades.
