Downtown Vancouver Fishing Report, Jan 27
Winter chinook season has finally gotten going in local Vancouver waters. After a slow start to the winter chinook season we have finally been getting consistent results in Vancouver Harbour. The average size of the keepers we have been getting so far this January has also been above average over previous years. We have had some good success in the inner harbour with chinook salmon up to fifteen pounds. The bulk of our success has come from the freighters and the West Vancouver shoreline. We have averaged 3-7 hook ups a trip over our last 6 outings. We even hooked and landed a hatchery coho yesterday, January 26th. It was about 2 pounds and must be one of the early coho that head up the Capilano River in the spring. Hopefully a good sign of things to come.
There has been some large chinook salmon up to 29 pounds picked up over the last few days in Howe Sound. One boat landed a pair of beauties on Sunday, 23 and 29 pounds. Late January and February quite often produce some real quality chinook salmom.
The usual assortment of winter chinook gear has been working. Coyotes, chovies, and hootchies with shades of green, yellow and black have been our favourites this week. The fish have been coming from 80-120 feet on the riggers.
Crabbing has been fantastic with pots being dropped on every trip!
