BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT, MARCH 3/09
The local saltchuck has had some nice quality fish around. Unfortunately, you have to put your time in to get them. The good bump of winter chinook that came into Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound in January and early February have dispersed and now some days require a lot of searching. This past weekend there was a few nice fish taken in Howe Sound and a few nice fish taken in the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour. The fish that have been getting picked up have been on the standard winter chinook gear. Coyote spoons (green, white and chrome), anchovies, and hootchies (white,glow,purple haze,splatterbacks) are all good bets this time of year. The bulk of the chinook are being caught in the bottom third of the water column like usual. As the water warms and the clarity decreases more and more chinook salmon will suspend in the mid water.
As we progress into the spring we should see the action pick up in the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf Islands. The springtime angling in Vancouver can be some of the best of the year for chinook salmon. The Gulf Island are typically really good in May,June,andJuly.
