Saturday and Sunday provided some excellent bass catching for Jeff and Al. While their was to learning curve to overcome the men managed to catch some very large bass on Saturday including one that went 12.5 pounds. On Sunday the learning curve was overcome and Jeff was able to connect with five of his first fist five bites. The sixth was lost and then Jeff followed with seven of eight.
Al got bit on both days and had a very good hook-up percentage. The landing percentage was much greater on the second day of the trip than the first. The bass bite was effected by wind and wind direction. The wind affected the coloration of the water. We adjusted accordingly.
On Saturday we fished three different spots. Two of those spots produced very well. The second spot, the SE Corner Spillway did not produce a bite. On Sunday we fished two spots and about an hour of artificials. The remainder of the time we fished wild shiners.
The majority of the bite came before 10:00 AM. If an angler did not get to the lake until 9:00 AM he missed the majority of the day's bite. You are never sure when the major part of the bite will come. However, if you are not on the lake near safe light you miss a very good opportunity. Generally, the wind is less and the conditions are more favorable for a good bite.
Every bass that Jeff and Al caught was larger than the largest bass most folks catch at Garcia. Jeff and Al wanted to have the opportunity to catch a ten pound bass. So we opted for Stick Marsh and the use of live bait. Jeff caught a twelve point five pounder. Al caught an eight pounder. On Sunday Al had one on that Jeff and I believe was larger than the twelve point pounder. Al's bass swam into a tree and did not come out until it managed to saw the 30 pound test Trilene Big Game in two.
