An incredible fishing trip today aboard the Keeping It Reel with Capt. Mike and mate Tyler. A slightly rough day, 3-5 ft seas blowing 15 knots out of the SSE. We went kite fishing in about 150ft of water, just 1 mile offshore of Fort Lauderdale. We got a quick chop off by a kingfish, didn't hook him, and then no action for almost an hour.
Just before we were about to change tactics, we spot a frigate bird above the boat, and then a couple more right after. Tyler pitches out a couple pilchards on spinning rods and hooks into 2 dolphin fish immediately. Then and explosion on the left long kite bait. The fish took drag like crazy and almost spooled us.
We quickly boated the 2 dolphin and started backing down hard on the tuna. We had him only on a Shimano 25 TLD strung with 40 pound ANDE monofilament. That's extremely light tackle for a tuna this large. We fought the fish for 3 hours, the fish nearly spooling us 3 different times. Finally got him to the boat and it took 3 of us to gaff him and pull him aboard.
Awesome fish, weighted out to 165 pounds. This is the biggest yellowfin tuna caught in Fort Lauderdale in a long time. Most of these bigger yellowfins are caught either in the Bahamas or in the Keys. There are some awesome fish biting offshore of Fort Lauderdale right now. Let's go fishing!
