Surf fishing in duck really turned on over the past two days. Black drum, puppy drum, bluefish, sea mullet, and trout have all made a great showing. Jay Bender reported catching 18 speckled trout last night behind the Hampton Inn, and catching 25 behind Sharky's this morning. The Sea Hag with Captain Frank McCargo fished a half day trip this morning and caught a limit of nice sized king mackerel, a nice jack, and a black tip shark. Frank was fishing at the AR145. The water temperature at the Duck Pier is 69.4. There is a high tide at 1:48pm. Just a note about "years of experience", Captain Clay Hauser, aka, "small boat" , originally got his work permit in 1978 in order to work at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. He worked the docks for a few years and then got a job as a mate. He fished with people like Lee Perry, Duke Spencer, Devon Cage, Bobby Smith, and many other reputable captains. Clay then got his captains license in 1996 and started running a boat called the Tide Line. Clay ran the Tide Line until 2007. He now is the owner-operator of the Miss JD. I know some BIG boat captains that were still in diapers in 1978. Below are some photos, one is of Frank's catch, and the other is of two stripers caught in-between the Currituck Bridges on the Miss JD.
Good Luck,
Chris at Sharky's
