Alabama's Tennessee River reservoir, Wheeler Lake is currently down 2 feet and it may fall a few more feet for winter pool.

Mid October's water temperatures of 75 degrees have both largemouth bass amd smallmouth bass mingling together and feeding together as well.

This feeding spree will continue on into November and December before it gets real cold and it begins to slow.

Wherever you find the baitfish on massive Wheeler lake (impounded in 1936) you will find big bass of both species.

Plus, its not unusual to find both of these largemouth and smallmouth bass species feeding together, in the same places, and hitting the same lures you offer them!

On recent guided fishing trips with Reeds Guide Service to Wheeler lake (the lake's oldest guide service for over 40 years) clients have seen largemouth bass weighing up to 7 pounds and a few smallmouth bass pushing the five pound mark!

Lures like topwaters, swim baits, shallow diving crank baits, lipless lures, spinnerbaits, jerk baits and jig combos are just a few of the tempting offerings that we have fooled some of these big, Wheeler lake bass with.

Wheeler's Smallmouth Bass - Although these brown bass are typically called, "small" mouth bass don't let the name fool you. They will hit some very big lures!

Small topwater lures like pop-r's and baby torpedoes do fool a lot of these smallmouth bass into striking, but some of the bigger, trophy-sized smallies have been taken on oversized lures like Heddon's three-hook, zara super spook.

A big offering for any bass...
