Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!
Albino Cats and Snakes!
My father and I decided to take a fishing trip, but not in the creek, river, or ocean. Daddy wanted to give Aunt Hattie's freshwater lake a try. According to the family "the fishing was great." Everyone was catching large white catfish. I guess before I get into the actual fishing day I must fill you in on a few little minor details. At least this is how I remembered it. You must also know that it has been over 40 years since this fishing trip. I will try to remember all facts correctly.
According to the story my uncle was going to take his newly dug lake, stock it with albino catfish, raise them, sell them, and make a small fortune. You know the old saying about white catfish, "they taste like chicken, but they are still fish." At any rate the stage was set, and the lake was filled with juvenile white catfish. Apparently persons in charge of this big operation forgot to check to see whether or not there was a market for a fish that tastes like chicken, because no sales could be made. While all of this was going on the catfish were reproducing and growing at a rapid rate. The reason being is that they were putting on a serious feedbag daily. As the story goes everyone in the family and all of the neighbors were tried of eating white catfish. After hearing about their dilemma my father decided that he want to go and catch a few so that he could cook up some of his famous "Cat Fish Stew!"
After stopping at the local "Woo's Hardware/Tackle/Grocery store for some snacks and light weight tackle we were off to catch a albino catch fish. I was excited about the hold thing, because I had never seen a white catfish before. After reaching the area and walking down the bank we set our lines out. I can't remember exactly what we used for bait. A few minutes after arriving we started talking about how hot it was. That's about the time that we both started thinking about snakes. Now as you all know there aren't too many snakes hanging out at the Savannah snapper banks. About that time we did in fact see a large snake. When asked if the snake was poisonous, my father had a standard answer. There are two types of snakes one is dead and other is alive. Both of us stood up from our little stools and proceeded to start doing the back step. As my father backed up, he took his rod with him, which pulled the line directly over the snake. That's about the time that the hook and line became tangled with the snake. Daddy didn't at first realize it, but he had the snake in tow. At this point, things were happening fast in the movement department. All daddy had to do was to drop his rod, but he didn't let go for some reason. Up the bank came daddy with snake in tow. This all boiled down to no catfish stew tonight!
The moral of the story is a simple one and it goes something like this: "Never leave ocean fishing behind just to be able to target a fish that supposedly tastes like chicken, because you might find yourself dragging in snakes!"
