Spring has sprung here in East Central Florida, plenty of 80’ days, but still with cool mornings, our water temperatures have been swinging between the mid 60’s and mid 70’s the last few weeks as we transition away from winter. Schooling baitfish and inshore gamefish is the usual pattern for early spring here, they have spent the winter further south and now swim north following the rising sea temperature. Baitfish as glass minnows, mullet and pilchards, game fish on their tail as Bluefish, Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish. Local resident fish as in Seatrout, Black Drum, Redfish, Snook and others start moving about and looking for food more as the temperatures rise after a winter of chilly water temps as low as the lower 50’s this year. It has been a bit of a pendulum swing through the transition, with warm periods then chilly once again, water temps shifting 10 plus degrees from one week to the next, but as calendar spring arrives now the warm pattern will set in in to stay for the rest of the year till next winter. Black Drum have been one of the more consistent good rod benders, lots of little ones 1 to 2 lbs. up to good back waters size of 5 to 8 lbs. Long time regular client Matt from Ormond Beach Florida caught a few good ones on his recent trip with his dad Dr Ed ……………….
Another long time regular client Darin from Kansas City caught a good backcountry Drum along with many other species along the way fishing the winter holes ………………..
………….including a fun size Redfish off a back water drop off ………………..
………. Darin’s fishing partner Steve also shows off a good Drum, one of several they caught on this afternoon charter …………….
Another fun size little Redfish caught by Cassidy here from Denver Colorado out on a family charter…………….
Jack Crevalle are always a rod bending chance here in our intracoastal waterway backcountry, not as many in winter, but with springs arrival are always plenty of hard pulling Jacks …………….
