With a Little Thought August can be the Best Month on Guntersville
Every year when it is hot and sticky and muggy the fishing really picks up on Guntersville if you just fish the right patterns. There are a few things that August brings into play and if you use the grass and heat to your advantage you can really have some great times in this heat.
The first thing I do is start fishing deep into the narrow grass lines, bass use the thick vegetation to find cooler water and many times that 4 foot deep water thickly covered in grass can be your best friend. The other thing is bait fish, if the bait are moving around the grass and you can see them that means the bass have more than likely followed them into the thick grass. It's easy feeding, there are plenty of ambush spots and edges and hiding spots for them to find easy prey. The thing to look for is the nastiest grass on the water, as it turns browns and foams and opens holes it becomes a paradise to find good bass.
The patterns I fish are very simple, I fish a fluke over the grass, I work it slow, fast and every retrieve I can fish until they hit it. If the water is a little deep along the grass line the first thing I pull out is a flipping stick, flipping a big one oz. Tight-Line jig in and around the holes and edges. If the fluke or jig doesn't produce I start pulling out my frogs and work them in different presentations to see if they can get me a bite. A buzz frog can really get some great action over thick grass; a traditional popping frog also causes a stir and catches fish. Maybe just a traditional frog worked erratically over the holes and into the grass mats.
Lastly if the heavy grass doesn't get me bit then I will find the grass that is still covered in water and has a 6 inch or so gap between the grass and water then I pull Pro Assassinators buzz baits over the top. The exciting thing here is this can last all day long in the hottest part of the day. August can be a great time of year I promise you!
