The Fall Bite can Change your Patterns
As we transition into the fall bite there are many techniques you will need to change to load the boat in the fall! One of the first things to change is going to be your search efforts, where do you start to find the bass when you haven't been on the water in several months. This is a key to success, as finding the bass in the fall many times changes drastically.
The very first thing you should do when putting your boat in the water is look for chasing activity around the boat ramp this can be a key that is right in front of you! If you're seeing this occur when you're putting in then there is a good chance that the bass have made some movement to the shallows. With this in mind I start at the mouths of the creeks, and boat houses are a good bet, as it is generally the first structure the bass stage on as they progress to the fall feeding and the back of the creeks. As you test the boat houses fish aggressive with top water baits like buzz baits burn them by the edges of the boat houses and you can quickly test your observation that the bass have moved to the creeks. There is nothing more fun and it is great fall search bait.
The next thing is your bait selection will change dramatically in the fall, your finesse fishing from summer techniques will change to more power fishing and bait selection will become much more aggressive. Baits like Punisher Spinner baits and Secret Weapon Buzz Baits will be more of your bait of choice something that allows you to cover water and aggressively locate fish. One of the best presentations is Missile Bait Shock Wave Swim bait aggressively fished over 8 to 10 foot grass; just ticking the top of the grass can really pay off. I also go back to SPRO square bill crank bait like the SPRO Fat John 50 or 60 and work it aggressively around the grass that is covered in a few feet of water. Fall is a great time, but pattern change is the key to finding the fish!
