Whenever I set out for another wintertime fishing trip to Alabama's largest and best, big bass lake, searchingfor those extra special, trophy sized largemouth bass of Guntersville lake, Ionly expect to get a few bites.
Especially when water temps are in the low-to-mid 40's and the air temperature never reaches 55 degrees! Adding a cool morning with air temps in the 20-30 degree range, cold northerly 5-10 m.p.h. winds and a mostly cloudy day, and it can bedown right miserable weather. But, I love it.
No matter what the conditions I always know that on any trip to Guntersville lake it can turn out to be one of those very memorable days, onelike we recently had. We fished very hard all day on a cold day wearing jumpsuits and heavy coats all day.
But the bass that surrendered to our jig combos and ten inch worms would warm up any angler on any cold, winter day. In about 10 hours of fishing the lower end of Guntersville lake we only had about 10 hits between the both of us. But they were big bass bites!
We had a 3 pound bass and a nice five pounder to start our day. Then a 9 pounder that really warmend things up. Then a 7 pounder and last of all, a bass weighing a few ounces over 10 pounds! What a day 5 bass total weight about 34 pounds!
Fishing slow with bottom fished lures like worms and jig combos, we only boated about 8 bass in 10 hours of cold wintertime fishing.
But without the right frame of mind we could not have succeed in our quest for a true, trophy bass. The trip called for slow fishing and paying particularly close attention on every cast we made, about 2000, in a days time.
Fish slow spring will soon be here...
