With all the rain we have had in the past year or more I thought I would spend a little time talking about fishing when we have high water or flooding conditions, and if things keep on we may see a lot of it! The first thing I try to do when fishing under these conditions is identify the mud lines.

Guntersville usually muddies up very quickly during these heavy rains, but as always not all areas are as muddy as others and mud lines generally produce ambush spots for active bass. Having said that the old saying that bass move shallow in high water is very true, so you must look for the mud lines in areas where the bass will move too. This means that your heading to the banks and bushes and wood structure and your looking for breaks in the mud lines along the edges of the structure. A lot of times the mud lines are just out from the shore lines or break around a bush or stump and you can bet that a bass is sitting on the clearer edge waiting to feed.

In my mind this is perfect condition to flip a Tight-Line jig and wiggle it over the clearer edge, or stroke it off a treetop along a clear point. Many times the mud lines and structure will form subtle points or indentations around or next to cover. That subtle break generally occurs because of two reasons, the structure has a small drop around the edge or in-between cover or the structure is breaking the water flow. Which ever of these occur you need to fish it because the small drop, or current break is generally just below or next to the mud line and holding a big bass.

Lastly Guntersville being an impoundment, means not all areas are created equal so when heading out to fish when you know it's a high water day needs some up front research to get to the best areas. Not all the creeks have good high water structure, but the ones that do will produce big time!
