Fishing Line can Make a Difference

The fall is the time of year that you as an angler must make the correct choices when it comes to fishing line. This past week I had a customer lose probably his best 2 fish of the day because he broke off several times after bringing line not capable of getting the bigger fish out of the grass. This can be very upsetting when you work hard all day just to find bites and then when you finally hook a good fish your line breaks.

I suggest a few things for all fishermen to live by so you catch every bite you hook! First of all fishing line does have an extended reel life and it's not as long as one might think. The conditions of where your keep your rods and reels also affects reel life of fishing line. Fishing line might last 1 month to 2 months at best without needing to be changed, and if your reels are kept in extreme heat like in a garage it can be even less. The heat breaks down most line and after just a few weeks in extreme heat the line will go bad. Braided line will last a little longer but sunlight can be a real enemy of braid as the sun weakens and breaks down braid.

The next factor is rigging line for the proper conditions and on Guntersville where the fall is the heaviest of grass time on the lake you must really rig for the bait you're using. If your bait is fished over or on grass in the fall I always use a 50 lb braid for most of my reels. If I am fishing baits that I know will be off the grass then I go back to my more traditional mono type line. Lastly of course one must rig properly for bait presentation so if you're using a crank bait then line size certainly comes into play, as it does for any bait you want to go deep! Line strength is certainly important but line type also plays a big part in today's newest line technology.
