What is the Attraction to Fishing the Bridges
Every year as we get more into the deepest part of the winter fishing, we see more fishermen heading to the bridges to find their winter bites. The attraction to the bridge has been somewhat of a mystery until the past few years. In fact with onset or Lowrance Structure Scan we were all guessing as to what was on the bottom that held fish.
Now the truth is revealed as we can visible determine what is down there that is holding fish, and how to fish it! First of all a bridge area that has a major creek running under it has a telling story of holding bass in the coldest of days. The major creeks have always been highways for bass to travel and feed around, and as the creek narrows under the bridge itself, the fish stack more and more together where the narrowing is at its narrowest point. The next important thing is that when TVA is pulling water, the bridges become ambush areas as current moving in and around the pylons are just ideal for bass to ambush bait with their bodies positioned into the current.
It is also common knowledge that the bait travels in large balls and the bridges offer bait protection on 2 sides where the bridge narrows; so these areas become safety heavens for bait to some degree; and of course where the bait is, the bass will follow. In the last couple of years with the onset of the A-rig, we now have a bait that looks to be life like group of bass and worked on the bottom becomes food for the bass. This bait has just been deadly pulled on the bottom as it becomes food for easy access as bass stay close to the bottom during the cold weather.
Lastly as stated we can now see the bottom structure with our electronics and the truth is revealed; as the bottom is full of stumps, rock, depth change and becomes the perfect bottom design for bass. It has it all, and the bass are there because of it!
