Frog Fishing Made Different
With the Snag Proof Tournament right around the corner, and the top water bite somewhat weak; I thought I would give you some alternative ways to fish a frog. Believe it or not fishing your frog in the traditional manner by working it over grass is just one of the many ways you can catch fish on a frog. In fact it may not be the best use of a frog to consistently fish it on top of grass as I have caught bigger and more fish in numbers using it differently.
A frog is great bait fished on the bottom and there are several techniques to get the frog to the bottom and catch fish. The first way I fish it is to flip the frog on heavy line with a one oz. weight. A frog is not only a great fish catcher on the bottom but its unique presentation flipped with a heavy weight is a killer for big fish. The design of a frog just presents it on the bottom in such a unique way that bass eat it up; they hit it hard, there is no doubt when you get a bite as they rip it out of your hand. The key is making sure you get a good hook set as the hooks over the back of the frog can come unhooked easily as we have all learned from fishing them on top. I actually add two small trailer hooks to the back of a frog and have found many times that can be the difference maker in the hook set. One problem with trailer hooks is the small ones also have small eyes and getting them over the frog hooks can be a problem so I use hooks made for trout lines, they have bigger eye openings by design.
Lastly taking a frog and using it by fishing the frog on a Carolina Rig is also a great way to find fish out off the grass roaming the bottom underneath bait fish. I set it up with a good 20 inch leader and add trailer hooks as described above, it is also a great way to find bass around stumps and flats where the bass have a tendency to be following the bait away from the grass in 10 foot of water. Frog fishing can be made different, just be creative!
