Frog Mats in Detail
The difference is in the details, if you are not making detailed observations, you can waste a lot of time trying to find the correct and most productive frog mats. Yes, it might even be a sixth sense that brings anglers to the correct type of cover when there are miles of grass mats and only a-few-hours to determine the right one that will put you in the fish! These are the observations you must be able to make to get the frog bite that we all love.
Hearing, seeing, and observing are all keys to making a productive cast into the mats of grass to have that explosion and get you fired up in the fall of the year. Your senses are key, you must listen for the brim feeding or sucking down the bugs on the top of the mats in the area you are fishing. Your eyes must lead you to the correct type of grass with cheesy nasty grass, with holes for fish to explode through and bait moving about for the bass to feed on. Understanding through observation the type of areas that would hold fish inside the grass; contours that break into drops of depth change or ditches about that the fish can move to quickly to obtain safety. The correctness is in the detail and being armed with the knowledge to observe the detail is where you will separate the good frog fisherman from the average one.
Once you have found some key areas as mentioned above then you start narrowing the choices down even further and let other elements lead you deeper into frogging territory; for example water current, if the area you have identified has water current moving around it from wind or dam control you have once again narrowed your choice to even a better set of elements and detail. How close are you to deep water or drops that the fish can move safely into; do you see jetties of current or movement on the edges all make your chances better for getting those frog bites and certainly is there bass already busting through the mat you have found or choose to fish. Detail, detail is key being observant and never settle so you can be the best!
