NEVER RULE OUT TOPWATER LURES ON GUNTERSVILLE LAKE!
By Reed Montgomery
Guntersville Lake / Saturday, November 29 - Air temps - Low 26 High mid-50's Lake level; Down one foot. Clarity - light stain.
I took a husband and wife couple bass fishing this past Saturday on Guntersville lake. We hit the year's first really bad cold front. Water temps had dropped from the mid 60's of last week to about 50 degrees that morning!
So both of them gave me a funny look when I told them to tie on some topwater lures that morning as we idled out of the boat launch!
Their doubts were soon erased when she caught the first bass of the day in about 2 feet of water. A nice largemouth bass of about 4 pounds. Later, a 3 pounder inhaled a zara super spook topwater lure. Then it got slow.
After the morning bite ceased they started fishing Texas-rigged baby brush hogs (creature baits) in watermelon, root beer, pumpkinseed and other translucient colors around shallow piers and boat houses.
What we soon found out was those bass were not around the cooler, shady water normally found under the piers and boat houses. On this sunny day the water was 2-3 degrees warmer nearby.
I think those bass were actually sunning themselves in between those man made wooden structures! As evidenced by us not catching any bass or seeing any other anglers fool any bass into biting while fishing close to the piers and boat houses!
In all, we had about 20 bassthat day! Mostly small bass but a lot of fun on a cold, slow day. They were hanging around isolated clumps of grass out front and in between all the piers and boat houses we fished! (See pictures!)
Thanks and Good Fishin'
