$7M fish ladder revamp to aid passage on Klickitat READ BELOW
HOPE TO SEE YOUR NAME ON MY 2011 CALENDAR. I HAVE OPEN DATES JUNE THROUGH NOVEMBER. DATES WILL FILL IN AS SEASON NEARS. I AM VERY EXCITED!!! www.adventurefishing.net REAL LY BELIEVING TRACY Z.....
2011 and future fish runs will get help making it to the upper watershed of the Klickitat River, thanks to a $7 million fish ladder overhaul.
Unobstructed by dams, the Klickitat flows more than 100 miles from the Big Muddy watershed at the base of Mount Adams and pours into the Columbia River below the town of Lyle.
The fish ladder built a half-century ago at Lyle Falls -- about two miles upriver from the Columbia River -- was outdated and was not helping enough salmon navigate the toughest stretch of falls the river has to offer.Beginning in June 2010 a crew of more than 20 workers began overhauling the outdated ladder to allow salmon and steelhead to reach the more than 60 miles of spawning areas above, according to Bonneville Power, which is funding the project. The total project is slated for completion Spring of 2011 The new ladder portion is now functioning great.
The ladder's entrance was redesigned to allow fish to enter easier, resting pools have been added and its steep slope reduced.
It's not the first project in recent years to improve fish runs on the Klickitat.
