Is it March already? Man it seems like it was December just yesterday. So, let's talk bass fishing on Lake Bastop and Fayette County. It is prime time for sight fshing on both theselakes. What I mean by that is bass should be on beds on both these lakes this March. Ok here I go telling you something that you might not have a clue about. Let me start over and explain what I am talking about. When the water tempature gets to a certain degree, the all so important yearly reproduction cycle of the largemouth bass occurs. The male bass knows when it happens and he finds a spot suitable for him to create a place for the female bass to lay her eggs so he can fertilize them. Hopefully some baby bass will be born. You may find the male or the female bass on this spot known as a bed and you will see the fish just sitting there or going back and forth over this spot. So let's talk about howyou cancatch that stubborn bass. Over the years I have talked about my favorite way to do this. I fish a lure called a jig which looks like a crawdad. I prefer the conquistador jig and I know we all have our own favorite but I love this jig because of the stainless wire that the skirt is tied on with. The skirt will never fall off this jig like some skirts do onother jigs. There is a new jig trailer out by Culpritcalled the Tail Gate Special. I am looking forward to trying it on my jig this year. It has raised bumps for texture and ramped claws fora lifelike swimming action. There is something else that i do that you may think about doing when you fish for bass on beds. I upsize my Maxima fishing line. I go up to 20 lb. test line to keep from breaking any fish off on hook sets. Now sometimes you may spend a minute or two to catch that fish andat other times it may take 15 to 20 minutes to catch that fish, so dont giveup. There is one spot inside that area on the bed that the fish will go crazy if you put your lure in it, so watch out and hold on. If you have trouble finding that spot , do not get frustrated and give up, keep trying. It is very rewarding when that bass strikes your lure. By April you may find that most of the bass on both these lakes will have spawned andwill be wanting to eat, so this is when i pick up a Rattle Trapand you may find this strange but,I dip my Rattle Trap in Kick'n Bass Anise Shad Fish Attractant, which leaves an oil slick behind it as i crank it in. I know this fish attracant has helped me put more bass in the boat. You mightgive it a try. Thanks Texas Outback Magazine for allowing me to continue to write about this sportI love so much. I would also like to thank the folks that make this happen forme everyday. Culprit Lures, Tica FishingTackle, Conquistador Tackle, Maxima Line, TTI-Blakemore Fishing Group, Kick'n Bass Fish Attractant and Rod Wrap for all thier support.
