We are in a period of time on Guntersville where the bass are feeding maybe every 5 to 7 days and you need a way to create a reaction bite. There's probably no more perfect time to use a "let it fall and rip it" presentation. The grass is dying off; the fish seem very lethargic you're working hard for a bite and your easily losing interest trying to find some active fish. All these are signs that it's time to do something different and this presentation can be your answer.
The good news is that there are a variety of baits besides the obvious jigging spoon that this can be effective with. First and foremost a Tight-Line Jig from oz to oz. Is ideal, all you need to do is throw the jig out without a trailer; let it fall to the bottom and rip it upward with a medium to heavy rod, let it fall back and repeat as you retrieve the bait. This presentation creates reaction bites, the bass will hit on the fall most of the time and you're in business. Other baits that also serve well in this "let it fall and rip it" presentation are tube baits or 4 inch grubs, they can be rigged weed less and be a good alternative in grass, countdown crank baits, offer a depth countdown for suspending fish not on the bottom. I also, especially in the coldest water, present a Punisher Spinner bait this same way, I'll throw it out say over the river channel, when the bait reaches the edge of the deep channel I'll let it drop to the bottom and rip it upward 2 or 3 times before I completely retrieve it. The last key to this is braided line; you need a line that does not stretch so when you rip it if there is a fish on there that you connect without stretch.
