Over my many years of Fishing Lake Guntersville in December, I discovered that if you can find some cover next to deeper water you have a chance of finding some good fish. These short sunlight days offer few opportunities to find a good fish but lay downs and cover lying next to a bank can be loaded with big fish. The key is water depth around 10 to 15 feet on or near the bank.

The key to fishing it is to work slow and be very precise with your cast, make sure you have worked every edge, every Y in the tree and all depths around the cover. In other words don't be in a hurry to move on until you are sure that the cover is fished thoroughly.

Unfortunately the wind can make it very difficult when trying to thoroughly fish this kind of cover. If you are fortunate enough to have a power pole this definitely makes this type of fishing easier. If not keep a rope in your boat or an anchor and steady your boat the best you can so you can fish every area and depth around the cover.

Fishing the correct bait is probably the next most important issue, you must find bait's that you can place where you want it and that the bass will strike. The first thing I do is go small like a oz. Tight-Line jig, it is easy to place, it drops slowly enough to entice a lethargic bass and you can cover every inch of a tree. Next I would go to a smal1 1/8 oz. Punisher Shaky Head rigged with a finesse worm or a small Mister Twister 6.5 inchworm. You have an enormous amount of control with a shaky head because the weight is part of the hook and it does not slip. Lastly if you want some flash use the Secret Weapon Assassinator oz. Spinner Baits, they are a small arm spinner bait that can be placed around cover and worked very effectively and slowly to entice a bite.

Cover, trees, stumps, boathouses and rock ledges, near 10 to 15 foot depths are all the different types of bank cover to look for. You can get off the grass and find fish in December!
